For every time you’ve ever wondered if your wiggly toddler is really strapped into his car seat well enough, a new warning from one parent gives you a good rule of thumb to follow. Read on to find out why this mom shared a picture of her child hanging upside down in his car seat and the lesson it teaches about safety for all kids.

Rachel McNamara recently took to Instagram and Facebook to post some unusual pictures of her son in his car seat. In one shot, she holds her son, who is strapped into his car seat, above her head, hanging towards the ground. In the other picture she is holding the car seat entirely upside down while her son is strapped into it. What would compel any sane mom to do this, you might wonder? To send a message about safety. In the post caption, she explains, “After strapping your child into their car seat, ask yourself if you’d be comfortable flipping it upside down. Remember that the chest clip should be at armpit level and the straps should be tight enough to pass the pinch test. #carseatsafety”

No one likes to think about those what-if scenarios when it comes to kids in danger, but as McNamara’s picture points out, it’s important to consider what can happen when you’re trying to keep your child safe. McNamara, who was stunned by the massive response to her picture, explains that it’s not necessary to actually hang your child upside down, she was merely trying to make a point. Clearly it worked.
