Ahh, the open road. You spend your days dreaming of ditching your cubicle, car pool and diaper duty and trading everything in for a long, long road trip. Well, with Airstream’s tinier version of the full-sized “Silver Bullet” your dreams might just come true. Check out what you need to know about the smaller-sized Basecamp.

Airstreams are the iconic trailer that that everyone knows by sight — immediately! And even though they’re pieces of history when it comes to motor vehicles (hey, they’ve been around since 1931), they’re big, bulky and expensive. If driving your minivan gives you pangs of anxiety because of its size, a full-on Airstream is not for you.

So, if you’re looking for something somewhat smaller, the Airstream’s little cousin the Basecamp may be just what you need. Instead of the 31 feet that the traditional Airstream takes up, the Basecamp is a more reasonable 16 feet long. Along with a smaller size, it also comes with a lower price point. The Basecamp starts at $35,900. Oh, and you don’t need a crazy-big truck just to tow it. Nope. This trailer tows on the back of your average SUV.

What does this mini version of the Silver Bullet have that will totally make you drool? It has a solar pre-wire kit that helps you prep for renewable power inputs. It also has a lockable technology dock and USB ports. Come on, you have to charge your phone and tablet somewhere. It also has hot water and a heating system too!

If the Basecamp seems small, it is. But you can make camping in it a less close-together experience. There’s an optional visor and optional tents that come out from the trailer, adding up to 120 square feet of extra space.
