Do you sniff your baby more than your dog sniffs, well . . . pretty much everything? According to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, that new baby smell that no mom can get enough of is just as addicting as sex and drugs.

This will probably come as no surprise to any mom with a brand new bundle of joy. The reason a baby’s smell is so intoxicating is pretty intriguing, however: it’s nature’s way of helping you be a better mom. Read on to learn more about why your baby is so irresistible.

The study was conducted with 30 women, half of whom had recently had a baby, and the other half who had no children. The women smelled several items with mystery scents, including a newborn smell. MRI scans revealed that for all of the women, the baby scent triggered activity in the part of the brain associated with reward learning, though the reaction was significantly higher in the new moms.

This same brain activity is also connected to satisfying sexual and drug-addiction cravings. The research suggests that the euphoric biological reaction to your baby’s smell helps ensure that new moms spend plenty of time bonding by snuggling and loving their babies. As if you needed an excuse.
