Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do you think your customers value most about your business?

Anne Ames: Gretchen’s has so much to offer! There’s a great selection of terrific merchandise, it’s a friendly and fun store to shop, it’s super convenient, and has fantastic customer service. We carry all clothing sizes from newborn (preemie really) to a size 16 for both girls and boys, as well as toys, gifts and accessories for each age group.

RT: What inspired you to start your business?

AA: Gretchen’s was started in 1952 so when I took over in 2001 it was out of love & respect for the store. I grew up down the street from the store and remember shopping here as a child with my mother.

RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?

AA: When I tell people in conversation that I own Gretchen’s and they respond, “Oh, I love that store!” Or when they recount fond memories of shopping at Gretchen’s as a child—or lament the fact that their children have outgrown us. All of those comments always make me so happy and proud that I am the one who tends the helm of such a loved store.
