Most of us never outgrow our love of childhood classic macaroni and cheese. Whether straight from the box or made from scratch, it’s a comfort food favorite and an eternal, picky eater pleaser. We stirred up six spots that serve the real deal—not the florescent orange stuff. So save the box for home and treat yourself—uh, we mean them—with some creamy mac and cheese that is sure to hit the spot.

Fox Brothers Bar-B-Q

Again, the barbecue places seem to rule when it comes to mac and cheese. Maybe because it’s the perfect accompaniment to a big slab of sweet and smoky meat? The saltiness of the cheese, the creamy texture—yeah, it’s a match made in heaven. At Fox Brothers, the macaroni is actually pasta shells. The sauce is made from white and yellow cheddar with a tiny kick of Cayenne pepper (hence being dubbed “mac-n-crack”). Most kids won’t notice the pepper, though. It’s ooey, gooey and everything you want mac and cheese to be. You can even order it up deep fried. Or, if you are looking for another cheesy, meaty twist on a kid classic, don’t miss the “Tominator”—a heap of tater tots, covered in melted cheese and Brunswick stew.
