If your weekend routine is starting to resemble a tourist checklist — belugas at the Shedd, U-505 sub at the MSI, Sue at The Field — then it’s time to dig deeper into our fair city. There’s nothing like a hidden gem to excite a field trip. Click through our album of uncrowded, secret spots tucked in your favorite places and let the fun begin.

The Space Walk at Adler Planetarium

How large is the universe? Where did it come from? Are we alone? Answer these tough questions and more as you glide across the Space Walk, a secret area that lies in the far end of the Planet Explorers kids’ section. Peer through telescopes aimed at beautiful objects in deep space, observe the famous red supergiant, and pretend you’re Neil Armstrong -- all while counting the millions of stars. The pitch-black “walk” also includes an e-postcard kiosk that lets you commemorate your journey by sending a message at the speed of light from Neptune, the Orion Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy or the Coma Cluster of galaxies.

Hours are 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekdays & 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekends.
