Between traveling, swimming, sports and a few family events sprinkled in the kiddos might be jonesing for some creative time where they can just splash some paint around. Keep the mess outside the house without having to enroll in a full-on camp with drop-In art classes. We’ve rounded up some of the coolest classes in the DMV where kiddos can paint, sculpt, learn (gasp!), and have a ball while channeling their inner Andy Warhol. Read on for the deets!

ArtJamz
Families looking for a fun afternoon should head to ArtJamz, stat. There’s swirls and paint galore for the little ones, while Mom and Dad enjoy a beverage or two while lounging around the studio. Families can either bring their own canvases or purchase one before smocking-up. Music is piped through speakers so don’t be surprised when your pint-sized Michelangelo starts bopping his head to the beat while painting his own version of the Sistine Chapel.

Upcycle Creative Reuse Center
Upcycle is the latest way families can reuse those bits and bobbles around the house that we know could be super cool; we just don’t know what to do with them! At the drop-in classes at Upcycle kiddos (and parents) take different pieces of fabric, crayons, buttons, ribbon, paper and more and use them to design masterpieces fit for a museum – or at least the family refrigerator! Stop by Upcycle and see just how easy it is to see the little ones happy, having fun and being good to the environment!

Metamorphosis Art Center

Kiddos heading into their own metamorphosis this summer should check out classes at a real-life metamorphosis center. Coloring in the lines is definitely not the norm at these drop-ins since the only limit is your kiddos imagination. What sets these classes apart? Not only do your little caterpillars get some hands-on experience with paint, colors, swirls, charcoal and other tools, but parents can get a little help about how to talk to their future butterflies while connecting through art.

The Walters Art Museum
Drop in art class and cultured museum? Sign us up! Parents and kiddos can learn all about ancient Egypt, 19th century painters or even suits of armor, and then make their very own masterpiece to hang on the wall at home. Themes change monthly, but each class features a tour through specific exhibits with interactivity, history and a lot of fun. Kiddos then head back to the Education Department where they get to work drawing, painting, scribbling, sculpting and decorating their objects d’art based on what they learned and saw while tooling around Berninis, Monets, Islamic art, Egyptian mummys and more.
