Fairy Jennabelle just won a Totally Awesome Award for Most Delightful Birthday Entertainer in Washington, D.C. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!
Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Most Delightful Birthday Entertainer” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Fairy Jennabelle: While the idea of a professional face painting fairy may seem whimsical, my clients really appreciate how professional I am at all times. Whether taking the time to understand a client’s expectations prior to an event, or working with all of their guests, clients can count on me to be professional while I create the whimsy and wonder at their event!
RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
FJ: This is not only a full time business, it’s a family business! My father works with me as my balloon artist and glitter tattoo artist. As an adult, I feel so blessed to be able to share such magical memories with him.’
RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
FJ: About ten years ago a dear friend was having a party for her son. She was at a loss for what to do for him. So I decided to help plan a whole party. That is when I first started face painting. Originally a professional fine artist, it was a natural transition for me. After the party all of the moms started to call me to do their parties! My second party was a fairy party. I got really into it, even designing and sewing my own costume. Hence, Fairy Jennabelle was born.
RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
FJ: Tea & meditation.
RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
FJ: When a client refers me to other parents… that is really the greatest honor and gift I could receive. In that simple action they tell me how they feel about my business and that’s everything!
RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
FJ: I thought hard about this question but I can’t really think of one. Frustrations come in all forms in life, regardless of the situation. I am just grateful that I am able to do what I love for a career.
RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
FJ: Patience… it’s more rare than you think.
RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
FJ: Someone once told me simply, ‘No matter what, just keep doing what you’re doing. You’ve got everything you need to succeed.’
RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
FJ: When I first told my friends and family I was taking my fairy business to a full time status, I was really discouraged by some people. Someone even told me ‘You are giving up on yourself if you do this business.’ BOY was he wrong!
