Camp Sonshine International has it all: a kid-centric mission, a wide range of fun activities for every age and set of interests, a vision of Christian values, and more. Now, this unique camp is also your Totally Awesome pick for best kids camp in the D.C. area. Kids and parents alike love that the camp sports go-karts, arts and crafts, swimming and softball—and that it’s tops when it comes to encouraging campers to develop socially, morally, and physically. Founder David Black recently took the time to chat with us about what makes Camp Sonshine awesome, what inspired him to start Camp Sonshine, and more. Read on:
Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do you think your customers value most about your business?
David Black: Our parents love what their campers say when they pick them up, like “Mom, this is the best camp ever.” Where these comments come from, is my 32 years of dedication to trained leadership, safety, security, quality and core values they can believe it. We also hear a lot about how every camper finds a friend and loves our variety of activities.
RT: What inspired you to start your business?
DB: I had seen other day camps and realized so much more could be done to give campers amazing memories that would last a lifetime.
RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?
DB: It is better to start small with a top quality experience, than to go too large and not deliver top quality excellence.
RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?
DB: Involve your family in the business. If they can reap fun and rewards, they will not resent what you do. My family loves Camp Sonshine.
RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?
DB: When I see my children excitedly tell their friends about Camp Sonshine and when I have prior campers now sending their children to our camp.
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
DB: Yes! Call our Director of Parent Relations and let us know you are a Red Tricycle reader and we will make our camp work financially for you.
