5 Ways to Go Outside With Your Kids Today By Pamela Worth, MA, CLC, Founder of Tiny Treks Most of us parents wish that our kids spent more time outside. Research shows that children in today's fast paced world have lost touch with their natural surroundings. Luckily it’s much easier than you think to get outside with your kids! If you have ten minutes, you can experience nature with your child while spending quality time together.   Here are some quick ideas you can try today: On the next day with clouds, take a blanket outside. Lie down together and look at all the shapes in the clouds. Check out this book about clouds that ties in beautifully. For children over age three, try to create stories with the shapes you see in the clouds. Take a walk through your neighborhood. Talk about all the colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple. How long does it take to find each color while walking?  Bring a piece of paper with you to draw what you see. How many times you can make a rainbow with only things in nature? Head out to the backyard with a kitchen spoon. For each of your children, draw a 1x1 ft square in the dirt. Tell them they have ten minutes to dig as deep as they can and see what is treasures they discover! Go on a leaf expedition. Can you find five different trees in your neighborhood? Can you find 10? How about 15? On a rainy day, grab a bucket and go on a worm hunt. It is so important for kids to be able to touch and hold wiggly worms and grow to love living things. Don’t forget to explain the importance of putting back living things!   Get outside and enjoy nature today!   About Pamela Worth, Tiny Treks Founder I created Tiny Treks in 1997 after being asked by a group of moms in a parenting class I was teaching to develop an interesting program that would be magical for families.  I started Tiny Treks, which combined my strong love of the outdoors and my philosophies about unplugging this generation. Tiny Treks is an innovative program for families who want to teach their children about the world through hands-on experiences, which build self-esteem and encourage a love of nature. We sing and dance outside, take wonderful explorative hikes, we create nature related art projects, eat healthy snacks, and read stories.  We do it all outside at different destinations weekly. Tiny Treks has summer and school year classes up and down the Peninsula (North Peninsula, Peninsula, South Bay) and now in the East Bay! Tiny Treks is also in Seattle and Chicago. Visit www.tinytreks.com for more information. I am the mother of four children and I try everyday to get them outside! There are so many opportunities to share the beauty and wonder of the outdoors.
