A trip to the coast isn’t complete without the requisite romp through the tide pools with our budding marine biologists. This summer, in between building sand castles and digging holes, you’ll want to visit the Oregon coast’s impressive marine gardens, created solely to get kids thinking about the ocean critters that live in tidepools. Read on to find out how you can explore these intertidal gardens and walk away with some cool new facts about sea stars, crabs, mussels, and more.

The Sea & Me
Created in 1990 to protect and maintain the sea life and coastal environments found here, the Department of Fish & Wildlife maintain these vast areas for families to enjoy and explore together. Seven unique areas were chosen to spotlight the amazing variety of habitats and ecosystems along our coast and interpretive information is provided to help nurture your young mariners’ love of learning.

Prepare to see sea urchins, flora and fauna, sea anemones, sea stars, crabs, snails and sea birds among other critters at these coastal communities. The best viewing is during low tide so follow the charts closely and get your kiddos involved in planning the best time to go.

Children of the Sea
The seven marine gardens are as close as Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, about an hour away, with volunteers from the Haystack Rock Awareness Program on hand in the summer to help families identify marine life. The furthest marine garden from Portland is just south of Brookings and rocks a three-mile stretch of intertidal awesomeness and several interpretive walks. This fab stretch is known as Harris Beach State Park and is home to Bird Island –the largest island off of the Oregon Coast. It’s a National Wildlife Sanctuary and a breeding ground for tufted puffins and other rare birds. Well worth the trip.

Each marine garden is unique; ranging in size and scope, just like our coast itself. At Otter Rock (just south of Lincoln City) you may encounter seabird habitats, Harbor Seals hanging out and all the intertidal community fun you can handle. Located down a gravel path from Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area there is a ton to uncover. And with a name like Devils’ Punchbowl – don’t you need to find out what this spot is all about? The theory is that this punchbowl (wild and tumultuous in winter storms) was likely created when a roof collapsed over two sea caves. Surfers and surf watchers will be your companions and a scenic picnic area is the perfect spot for lunch and snacks, or waiting for low tide, up on the cliffs above the churning foam.

From Sea to Shining Sea
Cape Kiawanda in Pacific City rocks one hundred foot sandstone cliffs, cliff-nesting birds, volunteers from KELP (Kiawanda Environmental Learning Program) and if you’re really, really lucky – touch tanks! Their tide pools boast multi-hued mussels, sea stars in orange, brown AND purple, plus hermit crabs, sea slugs, snails, anemones and sponges galore.

Yaquina Head Marina Gardens Rocky Shore is an epic spot for bird-watching – peregrine falcons, bald eagles, and seabirds aplenty – and whale watching. Their 1.8 mile coastal marine garden is about five miles north of Newport. There is a $5 entry fee here and the Bureau of Land Management staff is on hand at low tide most of the year. They’ll make sure no one is disturbing the intertidal wonders and answer any questions.

Plenty of Fish in the Sea
Yachats State Park boasts a new viewpoint and recently erected signage to help visitors make the most of their time. Look for Harbor Seals, sea bird nesting, and tons of shellfish. This area is very popular for mussel harvesting. Sport fishing, too.

Cape Perpetua may have the most intriguing name of the bunch AND you follow the Captain Cook trail to the marine garden located there. History buffs unite! The visitor center is run by the USDA and Forest Service, has an amazing view, and offers a bevy of information and ideas for outdoor learning. They have even held tide pool days in years past, so be sure to give them a call or check out their web site for recommendations on best times and things to see and do. Part of the Suislaw National Forest, there may just be days of adventure and play for your family here.

Get Your Sea Legs: Tide Pool Etiquette
All seven of these amazing marine gardens are extremely delicate. It is imperative to stress to your young mariners the mega importance of being careful and kind. A list of tide pooling etiquette is a groovy option to review before you head out. As for what to know before you go, it is really about dressing for the elements. Boots are a must. Plus extra clothes to change into as our ocean water is always chilly. Pack sunscreen, towels, snacks, sun hats, a camera, binoculars and anything else you can think of to help your team have an amazing day of sea life discovery.

The Marine Garden designation means these seven coastal habitats are protected and therefore extra special to all of us. Go forth and explore! And watch where you step, sandpipers.

Where is your favorite coastal tide pool to explore?

Cue water slides. The Chicago…

Slip ’n’ slides are good for sweltering summer days. But when the heat leaves your water table dry and your popsicles melting you’re going to need a bigger fix. A faster fix. A splashier fix.

Cue water slides. The Chicago area has its fair share and you can find them in public parks, neighborhood aquatic centers and major resorts. We navigated the waters to give you the rundown on the best five water slides around, with options for wee guppies and bona fide sharks alike. Hold on to your swimming trunks, because it’s going to be a wild ride.

Norwood Park – Chicago
Main Attraction: The public park is home to the North Side’s only water slide and one of the city’s most popular. Located in the outdoor pool, it has a winding tube, plenty of dips and angles, and a hefty set of stairs that provides a workout in itself. Sliders must be 44” tall.

Thrill Factor: 3 out of 5. Even without the backing of a huge waterpark, this city slide provides just enough speed, twists and turns to satisfy seasoned sliders.

Family Appeal: A favorite with young swimmers and explorers, the park also offers swim lessons, camps and special events to keep you entertained and enthralled.

Admission: Free

Sea Lion Aquatic Park – Lisle
Main Attraction: The 50-foot flume slides — twin body slides that require the rider to sit directly on the slide instead of lying on a raft — are less aggressive than the park’s daring drop slides, but a lot more interesting. Ideal for young risk takers, they consist of fully enclosed tubes or semi-tubes, which face the open air and offer a more breezy slide. Sliders must be 40” tall.

Thrill Factor: 4 out of 5. Tube slides are more exciting than traditional drops because gravity and inclines ensure you never stay stationary or flat.

Family Appeal: Additional amenities include a playground filled with water features, a vortex pool (or mini lazy river,) a teen pool and designated adult sections.

Admission: $5-$7 for Lisle residents; $9-$13 for non-residents

Raging Waves Waterpark – Yorkville
Main Attraction: PJ’s Plummet sounds like a ski mountain, but it’s a high-velocity, towering tube slide with a launch point that stands 72 feet high. Partake in spiraling fun and serious speed — the most recent clocked time was 43 miles per hour — as you descend into a shallow pool with a spectacular splash. Sliders must be 48” tall.

Thrill Factor: 4.5 out of 5. Feel an adrenaline rush as you manipulate the slide’s daring dips, turns and flips. Your mission: Stay on your back and keep your eyes open to maximize the thrills and chills.

Family Appeal: As Illinois’ largest waterpark, this 45-acre Yorkville favorite has an Australian Outback theme complete with a Crocodile Mile family raft ride, 18 waterslides and a sea lion show.

Grizzly Jack’s Grand Bear Resort and Indoor Waterpark – Utica
Main Attraction: Tempt everyone with the five-person-wide, bright yellow, beginner Family Slide. With no age limit, your entire clan can careen down together, enjoying a soft incline and the quiet rush of water.

Thrill Factor: 2 out of 5. You won’t feel the wind in your hair, but you’ll get a kick out of watching the kids’ expressions as make the tame descent.

Family Appeal: It’s about two hours outside Chicago, but don’t sweat the trip: There are hotel rooms onsite. Make a night of it and get up early the next morning for more water fun. There’s a kiddie pool, rock grotto waterfall, wave pool, slides and play structures for all ages.

Centennial Family Aquatic Center - Wilmette
Main Attraction: It’s not often that slides accommodate tykes that stand just 38” tall. But the kid-friendly one at this North Shore spot does. Watch your budding swimmer shout with delight as she careens into the safety of a shallow wading pool (depth ranges from 0 to 1.5 feet), either assisted or alone. With a secure fence to keep kiddies contained near the slide, you’ll have zero interference from bigger daredevils. Sliders can be up to five years old.

Thrill Factor: 1 out of 5. It’s tame, but for a toddler it’s all relative, right?

Family Appeal: The pool area is smaller in comparison to others, but gets rave reviews from regulars. That’s mainly because of its exceptional layout featuring dedicated, fenced-in kid sections. It’s an ideal fit for larger families.

Remember the days when playing in the ‘swamp of sadness’ meant skipping over the after rain-shower puddles and shrieking with terror (errr…glee) if you fell in? Even though we live in the big city those fun outdoor adventures are certainly not out of reach. If you’re looking for an outlet to tap into your inner Atreyu, strap your kids in the car after breakfast and fulfill your wild adventure quota before lunch time.

The Beginning
Nestled in the heart of Clairemont, Tecolote Canyon boasts tons of easy hiking trails, suitable for kids of all ages. Park on the side of the road near the Tecolote Canyon Golf Course to enter the trails from Mt. Acadia Blvd. and take a short (50 foot) walk into a completely secluded (ahem) forest. Whether your mini me is just learning to walk or is an avid runner, the trail is relatively flat and easy to navigate for all ages.

Ditch the stroller and opt for a backpack or sling since adventuring off the beaten path is half the fun. Lesser known and smaller than the popular Mission Gorge Trails, you can hang for hours in this little canyon without seeing another person. Your inner introvert will be thrilled, and your screaming toddler won’t bother a soul (not that you care anyway).

Explore
Keep your eyes and ears open for little creatures (read: lizards) rummaging through the leaves, look up in the trees for squawking birds and then scour the bushes for the hidden gem of the canyon…the golf balls! It’s the buried treasure equivalent of a city canyon, folks. The canyon’s proximity to the golf course and backyard playground to large apartment complexes makes Tecolote that appealing and elusive 19th ‘hole’. Warning: dogleg ahead!

Another great perk of this canyon is the super awesome climbing trees scattered throughout. The towering trees are magnificent for your little (or not so little) monkeys and you’ll be able to partake in cheesy photo opts galore. Pack a picnic and hang out in the shade and see if you can identify all of the wild music songs from the creatures of the canyon.

The Deets
This 6.5 mile long family friendly canyon doesn’t offer any fancy restrooms or other amenities — it’s just nature. For more information or to plan your route check out the *new* and improved visitor center located at 5180 Tecolote Road. Happy adventuring!

“Like” this story if you’ve visited Tecolote Canyon and then tell us in the comment section your favorite part about this hike.

Long, sunny summer days are the sweet spot of life in the Pacific Northwest. And yet, sometimes we don’t know what to do with ourselves when we no longer need to dress in layers and pack our Gortex. But your kiddos know what to do – they’ll find anyway possible to drench themselves (even if you say, “only up to your knees!”). Might as well make a day of it and let ‘em really dive right in!

Eastside Spray Parks

Even if you’re a creature of habit and want to head back to the watering hole nearest to you (no, not that kind of watering hole), check out our list of best splash spots and discover a few new faves that you’ll want to return to again and again.

Crossroads Park
An easy spray park to love, the Crossroads Spray Park (pictured above) is a celebration of aquatic wonders, complete with a life-sized orca to climb on, squirty sea anemones and spitting frogs. Hang out in the spray park, or head off to the awesome playground, this busy (and beloved) summer spot is packed on the weekends for good reason.

Grasslawn Park
If you’ve got kids under 5, you won’t want to miss Grasslawn’s splash pad. There are plenty of shady spots for a picnic and a great playground, and the gentle fountains are perfect for crawlers and early walkers; they’ll also surprise and delight your older kiddos who can try to dodge the sensor-activated sprayers. Psst…park on the 148th side if you want to be close to the splash pad.

Sammamish Commons Park
Hidden away on the Plateau, the Sammamish Commons Park (by City Hall & the new library) has a button-operated splash park in the Lower Commons Park. If you park in the Upper Park, expect a pretty long (10-15 min) downhill hike to the playground and water area. Better to park in the newer lot below (from 228th head west on SE 4th to 222nd Avenue SE), and bring the stroller so you don’t have to haul towels and gear such a long way. The Lower Park has a splash pad, playground, and porta potties. If you hit this park on a Wednesday, don’t miss the farmers market going on from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the upper part of the park.

This is one rockin’ park and a perfect excuse to put on your bathing suit. Insider Tip: To get the water party started, push the top of the yellow pedestal. Also, avoid going from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm, when everything shuts off for daily maintenance. But hey, the kids need naps anyways, right?

Eastside Beaches

If you prefer to cool off while digging your toes into sand, you’re in luck! The Eastside is chalk-full of beautiful lakefront beaches. With rare exception, all have lifeguards on duty and playgrounds to boot, so grab your shovels, buckets and sunscreen and get thee to some beachy goodness, STAT!

Chism Beach Park
Of the many sweet neighborhoody parks in Bellevue, Chism Beach Park is the largest on the waterfront and it has a great family beach in the lower section. There’s a small but workable playground and a nice sandy area along the lake for digging and castle making. The older kids will enjoy swimming out to the floating dock while the little ones splish-splash in the wading area.

For a well-manicured beach right in the city, try Clyde Beach Park. The sloping lawn ends in a mini-amphitheater where you’ll find the the pirate ship-themed playground; the beach is just below. Lots of great picnic spots here, especially on weekdays when you won’t have to share it with quite as many other folks.

Enatai Beach Park
Practically underneath I-90, this might seem like an odd location for waterfront fun, but this park has a few unique features you won’t want to miss. First off, there are picnic tables sitting above the boathouse, so you can have your lunch practically on top of the water! And if the kiddos are looking for some boating adventures, you can rent canoes and kayaks here from Cascade Canoe and Kayak, and paddle up the Mercer Slough.

Meydenbauer Beach Park
A secret garden-like park in the middle of Bellevue is Meydenbauer Beach Park. There are winding trails (paved, but a bit steep for fully-loaded strollers!) through a narrow swatch of wooded green space ending in a small beach with wonderful views of Lake Washington. It may be pint size, but it’s big on fun. The park has all the normal amenities (including a playground and reservable picnic tables) and for the true swimmers out there… a 50-meter swim lane in addition to the kiddie swim area.

Newcastle Beach Park
South of the Mercer Slough, Newcastle Beach Park is the largest beach in Bellevue. A tree-lined path welcomes you to the beach and a nice grass play area (bring your Frisbee!). There’s also a great playground for the Littles, and a huge dock that’s so big (300 ft long) you can almost convince yourself it’s a mini-boardwalk. The nice shallow water here gets warm (well, warm for Seattle), so fair warning that it might be even harder than usual to drag the kids out of the water.

Idylwood Park
Although dwarfed by its enormous neighbor to the north (Marymoor Park), Idylwood Park is in fact quite idyllic. Located on the northeast end of Lake Sammamish, there’s a nice sandy beach, a new(ish) playground with separate space for toddlers and older kids, and tons of shady picnic tables. Come early or look for the overflow parking lot on sunny days, as this place gets packed!

Vasa Park Resort
In East Bellevue, along the shores of Lake Sammamish, is the private Vasa Park Resort. Part campground, part summer camp, part family-friendly park, this is the spot for corporate summer picnics or uber family reunions… or just a fabulously fun day with your little ones. You can swim in the weed-free waters, rent jet skis, slip down water slides, shoot hoops; then shower up in the nice and tidy bathrooms before heading home.

Lake Sammamish State Park
For those close to Issaquah or who’ve had a morning on Tiger Mountain and are looking for a beach, head to the state park at the base of Lake Sammamish. With more than a mile of waterfront, you’ll be sure to find a secluded spot, if that’s what you are looking for. There are oodles of green spaces for lawn games or tag, picnic tables galore, a playground and tons of parking! Don’t forget your Discover Pass.

Pine Lake Park
The “little sister” just east of Lake Sammamish is Pine Lake and Pine Lake Park. A gorgeously wooded park, Pine Lake Park is probably most famous for hosting the annual Summer Nights at the Park concert series, but the beach is lovely and there are also two new play areas for the kids to enjoy.

Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park
On the very southern tip of Lake Washington, you’ll find the super sunny Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park. The city of Renton hosts lots of festivals here throughout the summer, including Kid’s Fishing Derbies and 4th of July events. The little ones will love watching to boats coming and going from the busy boat launch and grabbing fish and chips from Ivars or a milkshake from Kid Valley after their swim. It’s a happening place in the summer, so come early for a parking spot!

If you’re looking for a beach to bring Fido to, this park is it! There’s a great off-leash area (complete with a hose off area for your pup post swim). Note: The playground is getting a major face-lift this year so plan to spend your time at the beach or wandering the many trails.

Houghton Beach Park
Kirklandians love Houghton Beach. With great views of Seattle and the Olympics, and a fabulous playground directly next to the toddler-friendly beach (not to mention it’s located super conveniently downtown, right on Lake Washington Boulevard), this is a popular spot for folks looking for sun and surf on the Eastside. (Ok, there’s actually NO real surf here. The launch is only for non-motorized boats, so it’s perfect for beginners who want to rent their first kayak).

Waverly Beach Park
A small park (especially when compared to its big neighbor Juanita Beach), Waverly Beach Park is big on charm. With a fully enclosed swimming area (think u-shaped dock), this is a perfect spot for the kiddos to try out their new back float. There’s also some nice shady spots near the water and this beach has a bit quieter pace than some of the bigger beaches nearby.

Juanita Beach Park
Recently revamped and reopened, Juanita Beach Park in Kirkland now sports new walking paths, new landscaping, new public art and a nice new parking lot. Also, for the first time there will be lifeguards on duty this year, and the swimming area is enclosed, so it’s great for waders and for folks who want a “pool” experience at the beach. If you haven’t been in a while, it’s definitely time to revisit this oldie, that’s even more of a goodie! Expect it to be busy… good thing the park is big.

St. Edward State Park

Once a Catholic seminary, this is a park with some history! Go and check out the architecture and grounds, or go on a nice hike… before you make your way down to the water for a little dip. The ginormous playground here is not to be missed; there are turrets and towers galore that your princes and princesses will surely love.

Rain or shine, there’s no shortage of family-friendly activities going on around the city this 4th of July. From all-day Independence Day celebrations and spectacular fireworks shows to concerts, parades, and family picnics, there’s a little somethin’ somethin’ for everyone. Here are some of our picks for where to catch the 4th of July festivities this year.

Seafair Summer Fourth
If your family’s endurance is high and you don’t mind crowds, the all-day Seafair Summer Fourth (that’s the new name this year) is the big show in town. The folks at Seafair promise to make this Independence Day celebration (which has been a Seattle tradition at Gas Works Park for more than 24 years) one to remember. Starting at noon, families can enjoy a variety of entertainment, food, and activities leading up to a spectacular fireworks show over Lake Union. Thursday, July 4 from 12:00 pm – 11:00 pm (fireworks start at 10:15 pm). Seattle. Free. All ages. Event details.

Seattle Civic Band
The Seattle Civic Band will hold its annual 4th of July concert at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard. Pack a picnic lunch and be prepared to stomp your feet to the patriotic classics.

“Mommy, when can I have a sleepover?” Spending the night at a friend’s is a rite of passage that most kids (and parents) actually don’t enjoy much before middle school: it takes a certain amount of independence – and bravery – before anyone actually gets any sleep. But how about a night by your favorite shark tank? Or curl up to a couple of dinosaurs? With Mommy AND Daddy along for the fun, of course. That’s a no-brainer. These unusual sleepovers blend a little bit of learning with lots of fun, bringing sweet dreams for months, even years to come.

Natural History Museum
Peewee paleontologists and aspiring archaeologists 5 and up cozy up to their prehistoric friends, surrounded by fossils and getting acquainted with a few live animals as well. Camp Dino incorporates cool crafts like casting your own fossils to take home while Camp Archaeology gives diggers a chance to get down & dirty. There’s even a Camp Butterfly for girls only! All participants get to hang out at the Museum all day after their overnights. Evening adventures dig in at 6:30 pm, so eat a good dinner beforehand – programs only include an evening snack and breakfast. The popular programs sell out; check the website for details.

Your little gross-out lover will go for Camp Goo at the Page Museum at the Tar Pits. If it’s sticky, it’s here. Campers take a flashlight-guided tour of the tar pits and explore the excavated exhibits during a museum-wide scavenger hunt. For the ultimate Halloween celebration, the special ‘Boo and Goo’ sleepover sets up spooky encounters with skeletons, many dating back to prehistoric times (like, when our parents grew up).

Piglets, cotton candy, flamingos and bubble-gum…what’s not to love? No doubt about it, pink is more than a color. It’s an attitude. A little bit decadent, a little bit rock n’ roll, and a whole lot happy, the playful hue is an instant boost of inspiration. If your kiddo has a passion for pink, then you’ll be thrilled to know that June 23rd is National Pink Day. It’s time to evoke that classy lady Audrey Hepburn and repeat her words: “I believe in pink.” You know what? We do too. So we’ve gathered some fun ideas on how to celebrate the rosiest of colors on this special day.

Pink Eats
It wouldn’t be a holiday without food, so here are some yummies to enjoy (kids will love munching stuff that matches the color of their tongues!)

Pink’s Hot-Dogs
It’s an LA institution. And hot-dogs are certainly pink, and delightfully plump! There’s usually a long line, but that’s part of the tradition. It’ll be worth the wait when your kid sinks into a bite of LA history.

Where: La Brea at Melrose
Online: pinkshollywood.com

Pinkberry
Another LA go-to spot, especially on a hot summer’s day. Get a Pinkberry smoothie or go the more traditional route and order the strawberry flavor with fresh strawberries on top: it’s swirly pink goodness.

Where: Locations all over LA, check website for details.
Online: pinkberry.com

Sprinkles Cupcakes
This spot is the perfect place to go for a sweet treat. (Oprah even said so, and who are we to contradict Oprah?) Order the strawberry cupcake, which is made with ripe strawberries pureed into the batter and frosting. If you’re into baking, grab an apron for you and your kiddo and watch how it’s done here, with a complete how-to guide from the founder of Sprinkles herself. You may be inspired to whip up your own batch at home. (Or make a feast of it, by whipping up a whole meal of pink foods…)

Where: Downtown LA, Beverly Hills, and the Grove
Online: sprinkles.com

Polkatots
More cupcakes? Yep. Because we’ve got three kinds of pink here: food, decor and lighting. Created with kids in mind, this Pasadena eatery offers mini sizes for your mini-me and biggie sizes for you. (Or a mini or three for you as well – they might be too cute to pass up.) Order the strawberry shortcake flavor and chow down as you admire the pink walls and pink chandelier.

Where: Pasadena
Online: polkatotscupcakes.com

Pink Sips
Because you’ve got to wash down all those pink tasties…

Jamba Juice
The secret menu at In-N-Out is so old news. But did you know about the secret menu at Jamba Juice? Kids will totally dig the idea of ordering “off menu”…it’s like being a part of a special club. Order the Pink Starburst flavor and your kids will be presented with a healthy pink smoothie. Mom’s happy, kid’s ecstatic.

Where: Locations all over LA, check website for details.
Online: jambajuice.com

Millions of Milkshakes
There’s a hot pink awning outside and a pink menu board inside to match. Your pink aficionado will swoon at all the sweet options. You can design your own fantastic shake (strawberries or cherries will keep it pink and relatively healthy, but sprinkles, gummies and other candies do the trick too, if you’re feeling decadent) or order from the regular or “celebrity” menu. If Mama’s in need of a pick-me-up, they also sell Mr. Pink Ginseng drink (a caffeine-free beverage). After your milkshake munchkins have finished slurping, take a short walk to West Hollywood Park and let them run the sillies out.

Where: Santa Monica Blvd at San Vicente
Online: millionsofmilkshakes.com

Liquid
If you’re looking for more juice, less smoothie/milkshake, try Liquid on Melrose. It’s all natural, organic and raw, so you’ll feel good about downing all the fresh combinations. Order the Pink Aslyum: you and your kiddos will go crazy for it.

Where: Melrose at N. La Jolla Ave.
Online: liquidjuicebar.com

Cotton Candy
If you really want a pink treat, those clouds of fluffy spun sugar don’t get any pinker, prettier, or sweeter. No circus, no problem! Check out Tasty Clouds in West LA. You can go in person to pick up a few tubs from their retail store, or you can place larger orders online. The flavors are made with all-natural ingredients and no preservatives. We love that Nina, Tasty Cloud’s owner, was inspired to start her company after some serious pregnancy cravings for fresh cotton candy. She couldn’t find any in LA, so she bought a machine and set about creating fresh new tastes herself. You can choose from 24 flavors, but of course today we suggest the “Pretty in Pink” for the kids, and if you’re feeling a bit adventurous, try the “Berry Caliente” (a strawberry flavor with a jalapeno kick, offered in “mild” to “wild” strength) for you.

Where: 12325 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
Online: tastyclouds.com

And finally…
Since pink is the color of breast cancer awareness, we can’t celebrate Pink Day without celebrating women’s health. So winks, sugar and silliness aside, we’d like to remind all Moms to take care of themselves, set a great example for their kids and get regular check-ups. Pink Lotus in Beverly Hills is an excellent choice, with skilled doctors and a friendly staff.

The silver screen offers some welcome downtime for parents out-of-school kids, but we shouldn’t have to spend beautiful days in a dark theater. Since it’s summertime, break out those flip-flops, sun hats, and blankets and check out our favorite outdoor movie spots, where you can take in a moving picture while your little ones do some moving of their own.

Summer Movies in the Park
By far the best way to see an outdoor film in San Diego, this free event series features a giant inflatable screen that rotates weekly throughout the best parks in San Diego. The county provides hula hoops for kids to play with while parents veg out in front of the latest animated hits and the occasional throwback favorite. All movies start at dusk, between 7:30 and 8:00 pm. Bring blankets, seating and snacks, since food and chairs aren’t provided and it can get chilly after the sun goes down.

Don’t miss: Despicable Me at Las Palmas Pool on Jul 12, Brave at Ocean Beach Elementary on Jul 19 and Monsters Inc. at Rancho Bernardo Community Park on Jul 25.

Various parks throughout the summer – check the schedule to see when it’ll be near you!
Online: funflicks.com

Full Moon Drive-In
If you’re going for rowdy 50′s-style drive-in ambiance, this is the place to be. Full Moon Drive-In is notoriously kid-friendly, and your family won’t get angry glares for talking during the movie. The only downside of a night out here is that it can get expensive. Outside food or drink is not allowed, and the on-site concession stand features typically-priced movie fare. Pack your car full of friends to take advantage of the $20 per-car entrance fee.

Don’t Miss: They’re currently showing Monsters University at 8:30 pm and 10:30 pm on Fri, Sat and Sun.

1550 Felspar Street
San Diego, Ca 92109
Online: fullmoondrivein.com

Stone Brewing
Stone is world-renowned for – what else? – their beer. In addition to that, though, Stone Brewing features an amazing outdoor space perfect for relaxing with the family. Carpool with friends because parking is limited, and don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs and blankets!

Don’t Miss: Summer Family Night showings featuring beloved flicks like The Goonies on Jun 26 at 8:00 pm and Princess Bride on Aug 28 at 8:00 pm.

1999 Citracado Parkway
Escondido, Ca 92029
Online: stoneworldbistro.com

Civic Center Screen
The best place to catch a movie in San Marcos is none other than the backside of LA Fitness. The Civic Center Plaza has affixed a giant screen onto an outside wall of the popular gym, showing eclectic classics, Westerns and cartoons every night from sunset until 10:00pm. The space features a big fire pit and a large grass area for playing. The best part? You can bring your own food, or just grab some grub from one of the many nearby eateries.

Don’t Miss: David and Goliath at 8:30 pm on Jun 28 and classic cartoons every Fri at 5:00 pm.

East County residents can get in on the action with a double-feature known for being the most organized drive-in spot around. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food, and the audio plays right through your own car’s booming system. Just make sure you have cash on hand – they don’t accept cards.

Date night has rolled around and you’ve finally managed to secure a babysitting routine that works for your family. You’re excited; you want to ditch your mom uniform to experience something new. You waver back and forth between that usual, tried and true spot and something adventurous…even, dare we say it – hip. We recently discovered a new grown-up spot that’s hidden right inside your usual family restaurant. This new opening is the best of both worlds: family dinner in the front and grown-up hang out in the back. You don’t have to trek too far to mix and mingle at the new Pie Society.

What is Pie Society?
Driving by 17th street in Costa Mesa, you might’ve noticed that a different kind of pie joint replaced the old Marie Callender’s. It’s a new pizza restaurant known as Pitfire Pizza, a family-friendly hotspot that serves up wood-fired pizzas and fun, colorful clay (no crayons here) for your kid’s active fingers. In the evening, the back of the restaurant secretly transforms into the newest date night spot to hit the OC: Pie Society. Pie Society morphs into a hopping, grown-ups only speakeasy lounge. Intrigued yet?

The Libations
Yummy artisanal libations are mixed up by well-known SoCal native, Steve Garcia. The drink menu includes creative, original creations such as the Piesobar House Martini (Ford’s gin, Wodka Vodka, Cocchi Americano, Dolin Blanc Vermouth, bergamot oil, and lemon peel). Twists on the classics are also available such as the Hemingway Daiquiri and The Boston Sour. If you’ve been wedded to the sippy cup lately, New Society is an ideal environment to revive your love of cocktails.

Finger Foods Just For Grown-Ups
Chef Jason Neroni from Venice’s highly praised Superba Snack Bar makes food fun by imbuing the menu with childhood favorites such as the Cheeseburger Hot Pocket, Tater Tots, and Superba Fried Chicken. Light snacks include bread and butter pickles with sriracha and dill, smoked marinated olives, and pastrami peanuts with smoked sea salt. We love that the food is downright delicious without the price tag that usually comes along with grown-up faire of this caliber.

Fun Fact
Curious about the origins of the name, Pie Society? We discovered that the name is a clever way of paying respect to the old time way of making pies. Plus, the delicious finger food you’ll nosh on is served up on an actual piece of Marie Callender’s former pie oven.

Parking and Hours
A convenient parking lot is available, but be sure to plan your date night around Monday, the one night of the week Pie Society is closed. The rest of the week from Tuesday to Sunday, you can enjoy sanctuary from tedium beginning at 5:00 pm until closing.
