This week’s tip: Take a power nap.

Did you know that napping for 20 minutes is often required before a major effort in the military? Elite athletes also tend to use power naps to improve performance. (I certainly know that a quick power nap improves my patience when parenting—which can sometimes feel like an Olympic event!)

If we aren’t getting our requisite 8 hours of shut-eye, power napping may be our best bet in combating the mental fog that comes with being exhausted. Still feel sleepy after 20 minutes? Penelope Trunk takes what she calls a “caffeine nap,” advocated by researchers at Loughborough University for sleepy drivers. Coffee clears your body of the sleep-inducing chemical adenosine, but the effect doesn’t kick in for about 15 minutes. So if you chug a cup of coffee, and then immediately take a quick head-down, you should wake up from your power nap perky. Happy Napping!
