IKEA can be a furnishing paradise when you have kids. Thanks to the stylish looks and low prices, you can deck your home out without worrying how quickly the kids will destroy it. The only downside is the hours of labor and degree in rocket science it apparently requires for two grown adults to put together a dresser while your 3-year-old “helps.” Finally, those brilliant Swedes have come up with a solution. IKEA has partnered with TaskRabbit so you never have to use one of those tiny wrenches ever again.
IKEA acquired TaskRabbit last year and now the company, famous for its low-cost furnishings and meatballs, is putting that purchase to good use. After customers check out, they can get an immediate quote from TaskRabbit in the store on how much it will cost to assemble whatever piece of furniture they’ve just purchased.
The service starts at $30 an item, which can seem pricey, but it’s much cheaper than the marriage counseling you might need after spending all night trying to put together that new crib. So far, TaskRabbit is being offered in the UK and at two of IKEA’s US locations in Emeryville and East Palo Alto, California. It will expand to other locations nationwide in the next few months.
