Kelly McKnight, co-founder of Mothers Organics, recently took the time to chat with us about what makes this site so awesome, the inspiration behind the business, and more. Read on:
Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do you think your customers value most about your business?
Kelly McKnight: We believe our customers most value that, as parents ourselves, we have a special connection with them. Through high-quality products and top customer service, our vision at Mothers Organic is to make our customers feel like they’re getting personal recommendations on natural and eco-friendly baby products—much like they would from a friend or family member.
RT: What inspired you to start your business?
KM: We started out living a greener lifestyle when our first child was born. We started reading labels on the products we used on our baby, and learned more about the chemicals added to traditional baby products. After our own extensive research, we slowly discovered eco-friendly alternatives. We learned a little each day and started sharing our favorite products with friends and family. And then the idea for Mothers Organic was born. We saw an opportunity to share our top picks with anyone who wants to choose a more eco lifestyle.
RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?
KM: Patience and balance. The best way to find balance is through being able to let go and delegate projects to employees. I learned this from fellow entrepreneur/CEO Susan Peterson from Freshly Picked. She said something that stuck with me for a while: “Do what you do best, hire out the rest.” That quote is so true. Once you are able to let go you are able to get more done and actually watch the growth of your business happen.
RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?
KM: Since both my husband and I own and operate Mothers Organic, there are a lot of long hours dedicated to the growth of the company. The key for us is our common goal of Family First. We make sure to include our children in every aspect of Mothers Organic. From what inspired us to start Mothers Organic to including them in the review and testing process of the products we choose for our store, our children are always our top priority.
RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?
KM: There are so many moments that it is hard to choose one. Mothers Organic is like our third child, so watching it grow into what it is today is truly remarkable. I guess if we had to choose one it would be the Red Tricycle win!
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
KM: Yes! We would love to offer 15% off their entire purchase. Use code: REDTRI15
