Piled onto our beloved beige couch last Sunday, our family watched the show of a lifetime: Daddy’s feet. Thong after tossed thong, we watched with great anticipation as Daddy flung his footwear into the air. You may find this strange, and slightly absurd, but The Daddy Foot Show is one of my all-time favorite memories as a family. Truth.

It got Mommy thinking about Daddy’s feet. For too long, I’ve put my feet first while his feet have been ignored. Made fun of for their funkiness. Scolded for their crackability. Trod on by toddlers, toy trucks, tricycles and bicycles. Daddy’s poor feet!

In our family’s defense, feet have earned their soiled reputation. In fact, the scientific evidence of feet and their funk is centuries old! Washing feet in biblical times was reserved for the lowliest of servants. Indeed, feet are stinky. Feet are prone to fungus. Ew, but true. Feet and the shoes they inhabit are shunned daily, their outerwear banished to mudrooms. Feet are treated like criminals charged with carrying germs of mass destruction. The time has come to turn this “Ew!” into an “I LOVE YOU!”

Yes, times have certainly changed. It’s time we change the treatment of Daddy’s feet, too. Our family is going to let Daddy know we love him and his funky feet, too! That’s why for this Father’s Day, we’re treating his feet to the Father’s Day Funky Foot Rub — and your family can, too!

FATHER’S DAY FUNKY FOOT RUB

INGREDIENTS:

Daddy’s favorite snack and beverage of choice Funky music Towel Large bowl or basin (a cooking pot will also work) 1/2 cup Epsom salts 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon olive oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

First set the mood for family fun and put on some funky music. Tell Daddy to relax and recline in his favorite spot while the kids take off his socks and shoes. Make him feel like a king and put a towel at his feet. Let the kids have fun playing waiter, handing him his favorite cold beverage and snack.

Have your kids fill a bowl or basin halfway with warm water. Add a half cup of Epsom salts. Instruct Daddy to soak his feet for 15-20 minutes. If Daddy’s feet are extra funky, add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda to the water to calm the stench.

While Daddy’s feet are soaking, have the kids measure the ingredients for the exfoliating mixture: brown sugar, lemon juice, honey and olive oil. Combine these ingredients into a paste. Rub daddy’s heels, between the toes and all those rough spots in a circular motion, gentle yet firm. Take the towel and fluff his feet dry.

By the funky foot rub’s end, you’ll have a Father’s day of fun family memories — and one happy Daddy whose feet now smell sweet.
