It’s not often that you find the raw emotion and honesty of good old fashioned girl talk portrayed authentically on screen, but a brand new series hits the mark effortlessly. Jada Pinkett Smith’s new series Red Table Talk is the most authentic show you will see about the challenges moms, teenagers and all women face in their daily lives.
The premise of the show, which recently premiered on Facebook Watch, is simple. Pinkett Smith along with her mom, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, and her daughter, Willow Smith, invite viewers to be a guest for their intimate, personal discussions around a bright red table. With two aired episodes, the show has already covered some very heavy material, including the hard reality and lessons of co-parenting with your spouse’s ex that Pinkett Smith shared. The most recent episode was a shocking revelation for even the star herself, as Willow opened up about her self-harming.
“For me, what it’s about is to create and fortify safe space and have really unfiltered conversations because right now, in this day and age, the world is changing so much, and we’re trying to figure out how we can change with it, what do our relationships look like, how are we supposed to be parenting our kids, what does it mean to be a woman?” Pinkett Smith told Variety. “Now we have so many options — so many freedoms — and there are so many ideas that need to expand and grow. So really for us it was just creating a place where we have permission to talk through that and giving permission for others to do the same.”
Although Red Table Talk will focus on the conversations between these three women, it will feature guests, including Tiffany Haddish, Gabrielle Union and Will Smith’s first wife, Sheree Fletcher, who appeared in a must-watch conversation on co-parenting for the first episode. The series will feature 10 episodes streaming on Mondays. There will also be a Facebook live session on Wednesdays with the hosts to allow viewers to engage in the conversation too. “We just wanted to be organic — whatever the topic calls for,” Pinkett Smith explained. “We didn’t ease in [with any topics], but the live shows may give us a chance to clarify some of the things we talked about.”
