Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, YikYak, Periscope . . . as a parent, you might be asking yourself, “what the heck is YikYak? And do I really need another social app?” Snapchat — most famous for allowing teenagers to send scandalous photos and videos that can only be viewed for ten seconds — just added a new way to take selfies, and the answer is yes – we quite possibly do need another social app.

The new feature, called “lenses,” are essentially new, creative filters for your selfies. When you’re taking a snap (read = photo), press and hold on your face. Snapchat will momentarily scan your face to determine where to place the filter. The results are hilarious and trending all over Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Not to be left out, kids are having a great time with the filters, too. Scroll down for some of our favorites!

There are seven different Lenses you can choose from, including heart eyes, puking rainbows, bulging eyes, and an aging filter. Scroll through each on the bottom of the app before you take a snap. As a warning, there are a couple of scary filters you should steer your kids away from – including a zombie vampire monster thing. Kids will love the heart eyes, and the puking rainbows, though!

It’s weird, wacky, and adds a little something extra to your selfie.
