Not only is coffee your BFF on a bleary-eyed morning after pulling a parental all-nighter, it can also offer some great health benefits. A new study shows, however, that the roast you choose to fill up your favorite mug can make a difference in how healthy that java actually is.
According to a new study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of coffee vary depending on the roast. During roasting, changes occur to the beans that not only affect flavor, but also the physiological effects. The study found that roasting did not show a dramatic change in total caffeine based on the roasting levels of light, medium or dark. They did, however, change the acid contents and antioxidant levels.
The study concluded that light roast coffee had the highest antioxidant activity, and those same antioxidant properties were decreased as the degree of roasting was increased. The tests were performed on cell cultures and still need to be replicated in human trails to determine the real-life benefits. While you await that conclusion, the best takeaway for tired mombies everywhere is that caffeine levels are not altered by roasting, so you’ll enjoy the same energy boost no matter what variety you choose.
