Business Partners Carrie Anderson and Amy Kelly recently took the time to chat with us about what makes their consignment events so awesome, how they balance business and parenthood, and more. Red Tricycle: Congratulations! Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome.” What do you think your customers value most about your business?

Carrie Anderson & Amy Kelly: We are so honored to be voted most awesome kids resale shop/event! There are many benefits that Moo La La has for all of our customers, but the most appreciated is that we can help you save 75% while outfitting your children with brand name items. Our last event had almost 45,000 items; with each event, parents can walk away with an entire wardrobe for their child all at steep discounts.

Our customers also appreciate the fact that they can sell their gently-loved items for top dollar! Consignors prepare, price and tag their items using our online guide, so they are able to control the price of each item and earn more of the sales percentage since they are doing part of the work. Consignors earn up 75% of their sales, which is more than typical consignment stores and averages to be a much better payoff than a garage sale.

RT: What inspired you to start your business?

CA & AK: We both love to shop, love a good deal, and love to have a creative outlet. So this consignment event was a great solution for the outgrown clothes and toys that we have from our children. We had been to other events in other areas of Southern California, but thought that one in Redlands would be great for the Inland Empire. And judging by the response of the public, they really think it is great, too!

RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?

CA & AK: Be creative. Step outside of the box. That helps to set you apart from other similar businesses. Be personable! We love getting to know our consignors and chatting with our shoppers. It makes the labor intense week of work at the event so much more enjoyable for us.

RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?

CA & AK: Speaking for ourselves, we can’t do it all. And we don’t want to, not at this time in our lives. We have had opportunities to grow our business but right now we realize that our children are young only once and we need to soak in as much time with them as we can. There will be plenty of time in the future while our littlest ones are in school to focus more on Moo La La Boutique.

Also—have an amazing business partner! Finding someone that is a hard worker, creative, and compliments your personality is priceless. For Carrie, bringing a partner on has meant a divided workload (more family time), extra hands to help in our busy time, and increased creativity to improve Moo La La.

RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?

CA & AK: Our proudest moment was at our second event. Carrie’s husband was at a register, ringing up a couple that was preparing for their first little one. In that transaction they were able to purchase a bassinet, car seat, stroller, clothing, high chair, nursery decor, maternity items, etc. (basically everything for the first year of life) and spent about 80% less than what they would have in retail stores. The couple was over the moon excited and thankful. In that moment we realized how beneficial this event is to our community. It gives parents the ability to purchase high-quality items and not stretch their budget or over-extend themselves. It gives parents an opportunity to make a little Moolah on all the items that our kids so quickly grow out of. We are so thankful for every consignor, volunteer, shopper, and our husbands, that make this adventure possible. We appreciate the continued love and support from everyone and can’t wait to see you at the Spring event in March 2014!
