The second weekend in Feb. begins with a bang thanks to spark-worthy events like Adam’s Forge Festival at the Audubon Center at Debs Park and a kid’s book club meeting at Barnes & Noble at The Grove. This Is Manga the Art of Naoki Urasawa
Japan House Los Angeles is pleased to showcase “This is Manga – The Art of Naoki Urasawa,” a complimentary exhibit by internationally acclaimed Japanese manga artist, Naoki Urasawa. The retrospective exhibition will introduce more than 400 original drawings and storyboards, selected stories from seven of his major works, and deliver four consecutive YAWARA! stories every other week replicating the weekly serial style of many Japanese comic anthologies. Barnes & Noble has teamed up with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to highlight five books for young readers across genres and reading stages. Activities will be held, related to the books, as well as give participants book-related giveaways to take home, while supplies last. Story Time at the Fowler Museum
Join the Fowler Museum for an interactive storytelling experience to learn about migrations around the world. Children of all ages are invited to discover how one family faces difficult decisions while leaving their home in order to escape the turmoil and tragedy brought by war in The Journey by Francesca Sanna (2016). After the reading, Fowler Educators will lead an art-making activity related to the current refugee crisis. This program is inspired by Oakland-based artist Favianna Rodriquez, who created the Migration is Beautiful project dedicated to replacing images of fear with visions of shared humanity. Fri. For the Love of Glass
Step into the hot shop and work with glassblowing artist Kazuki Takizawa during this introductory workshop. Learn about mixing molten color and basic glassblowing to create a solid glass paperweight and one other small glass blown form. Works will be available for pick-up at a later date. Sat. The benefits of reading to shelter dogs have long been praised by educational programs and rescue organizations alike. Wags Kids! is proud to announce the launch of their very own reading program, Paws and Pajamas, hosted bi-monthly at their adoption center. After a brief safety orientation and mini-lesson facilitated by our Educational Director, Mikayla Park, your child (ages 6-12) will be able to read to one of our Wags Dogs in our beautiful facility.
