LA was, and is, the American city of the future. When you look at Encounter at LAX, do you see hints of the Jetsons space age airport? Look at the swoops and swirls in the futuristic Disney Concert Hall. Kids will giggle at the whimsy of the binocular building in Santa Monica or the flying saucer house in the hills. Overdrive is a new exhibition at the Getty this spring that explores how visionary planners and architects transformed an expansive, latent landscape into a vibrant laboratory for cutting-edge design. That’s our city! Here, in one place, you can check out our innovative freeway network, sleek corporate towers, whimsical coffee shops, popular shopping malls, refined steel-and-glass residences, and eclectic cultural institutions. See LA from the perspective of our architectural innovations and you won’t look at it the same way again.
Through July 21st. The Getty is open from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm Tuesday – Friday & Sunday. Saturday it is open 10:00 – 9:00 pm, and Monday the museum is closed.
