When’s the last time you took a family vacation that didn’t involve an expensive flight, but includes all the fun of summer? If you’re looking for exactly that, we’ve got a San Diego staycation planned at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. This family-friendly hotel is perfect for a weekend getaway or overnight away that will leave you feeling relaxed for the week ahead. Here’s what you can expect at your mini home away from home.
Family Fun at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla
Even the simple act of checking in at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla is fun for kids. Right inside the lobby is a Kids Lobby Zone created for the littlest of guests to hang out while parents check in. There are tons of books to read, a movie playing and comfy bean bags and cold water for chilling.
If you want to travel beyond the hotel, there’s plenty to do in La Jolla. Just ten minutes away is the famous Birch Aquarium at Scripps where kids will have a blast discovering the wonders of the ocean and checking out the awesome marine life. Explore the gem of La Jolla by taking in the shore, sea lions and seals, and save time for the gorgeous public art murals. Westfield UTC mall is one of the kid-friendliest shopping centers, complete with an ice skating rink, movie theater, play structure and a train.
Once the family is checked in, get ready for a super fun day of swimming, poolside fun and relaxation. You can cop a squat in one of the gorgeous cabanas or hang out in one of the many lounge chairs with plenty of shade. Order a drink, snacks or lunch from the poolside bar and restaurant. Kids won’t want to leave the Olympic-sized pool and jacuzzi, especially with the awesome inflatable rafts, inner tubes and giant beach balls.
If the kiddos want a break from the water, there are plenty of activities to enjoy that don’t involve getting wet. Grab a friend and play a game of foosball, or check out some paddles and start a ping pong match. There’s also corn hole, a giant Connect Four, tic tac toe and mega-sized Jenga. Kids (and adults) won’t want to miss the photo booth with a cool backdrop and disguises and masks for funny photos.
There’s event plenty of fun for the artsy kiddos. The Kids Craft Cabana is open every Saturday from 1 – 3 p.m. In this shaded spot, little ones can have fun creating and snacking. Activities have included DIY tambourines, painting pet rocks, sand art and lots more.
When the Lights Go Down in the City
The outdoor fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Every Saturday at 8 p.m., guests can enjoy a family-friendly movie while lounging in the pool. The films are projected on a huge poolside screen, so you can watch the flick from a lounge chair or while lounging on a raft in the pool. And don’t forget the s’mores! These classic summer dessert kits are available at the poolside snack shack and the fire pits are lit all evening.
Where to Eat
Of course you can enjoy a delicious meal at the pool. But the Hyatt Regency La Jolla also has several unique restaurants that are just adjacent to the hotel property. Cafe Japengo is known for it sushi and Japanese cuisine. Definitely check out the kids menu with tons of kid-friendly food options for young eater. We suggest the Bento Box for 2 with items such as chicken Katsu over mashed potatoes, teriyaki veggies, edamame, California rolls, shrimp and buttered Udon noodles.
If a steak is calling your name, Fleming Prime Steakhouse is where you want to go. The Melting Pot is always fun if you’re excited about a fondu dinner. And if you need a light breakfast, coffee or snacks, we suggest Perks General Store just off the hotel lobby.
