The “Material Girl” isn’t one to constantly share pics of her kiddos socially—especially group shots of the whole fam together. Recently, a rare Instagram photo of Madonna’s family surfaced, and the reason behind the megastar mama’s post is actually pretty awesome.
The sweet pic of mama Madonna with Lourdes (21), Rocco (17), Mercy (12), David (12), Estere (5) and Stella (5) was taken at Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care at the Queen Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi. It’s a pretty special place to Madonna, especially considering she founded the children’s hospital where it opened a year ago.
The children’s hospital is the result of Madonna’s charity Raising Malawi. After adopting now 12-year-old son David Banda from Malawi, the celeb started the charity hoping to raise money to fund efforts such as this one. Last January, the 59-year-old pop star confirmed that she had adopted twin sisters from Malawi, bringing her total family to a sizable six children.
Obviously, the mama named the hospital after daughter Mercy James, adopted from Malawi in 2009. At the center’s opening event last year, Madonna spoke about the hospital’s purpose: “The Mercy James Center remains not only a world-class intensive care hospital, but also a superior learning environment to train the next generation of Malawian healthcare workers.”
At a 2017 event, daughter Mercy James weighed in on the naming: “It is a great honor to know this hospital is named after me.” She went on to add, “But what’s more important is that we may help many kids and save many lives.”
While we might all might think of Madonna and fishnets, lace gloves and big hair, this standout star has come a long way since her “Material Girl” days. From pop princess and provocateur to majorly charitable mama who is helping to care for children around the world, Madonna is much more than just another celeb in the spotlight.
