Just 25 miles north of the city is a gorgeous farm that also happens to be an example of true farm-to-table living, The Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture. A pleasant trip by car or train, this 80-acre working and teaching farm with abundant gardens, all-season green houses and pastures full of barnyard creatures is open for visits Wednesday through Sunday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Pre-arranged tours are available for groups of 10 or more, or you can download a self-guided tour such as ‘Follow the Frittata from Farm to Table’ and the ‘Livestock Tour.’  Kids will squeal as flocks of turkeys waddle past. March out to the pasture where the Berkshire pigs, woolly sheep, hens, chickens and honeybees roam and buzz. And be sure to check the online program calendar for popular farm activities, like a hands-on egg collecting session, that teach the little ones where their food comes from.

The epic feast at the formal Blue Hill at Stone Barns restaurant prepared by James Beard nominated chef Dan Barber is more appropriate for a parent-only date night. However, mini-epicureans will be just as happy with the fresh bakery goods and salads at the Blue Hill Café or treats at the farm market (open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm). We’ll leave it to you to break it to the kids that Wilbur probably won’t be here on your next visit to the farm.
