Dads are the ultimate jugglers, from pancakes made to order to Sunday evening storytime. To honor all of the cool dudes in our life, we want you to meet nine New York City dads that inspire us. From teaching kids about healthy food to bringing design-forward kids’ gear to the marketplace, these dads are committed to spending as much time with their kids as they can and are, ultimately, redefining what it means to be a dad today.

Lance Somerfeld

The ultimate spokesperson for all things dad in New York City, Lance—the father of Jake, four—has done more than get dads together for playdates since he co-founded the meet-up group NYC Dads Group in November 2008. The group has become a destination of sorts for dads. And, by leading a group that now includes 800 members, Lance, a former sixth grade teacher who lives on the Upper East Side, has been on the forefront of how dads’ lives have changed. Lance is living the life of a stay-at-home dad, too, creating fun activities for Jake every day, including everything from once weekly trips to Fairway to hopping aboard a double-decker bus over to Brooklyn or riding the tram to Roosevelt Island.

Biggest personal accomplishment: “I think my wife and I are at the point where we're making this ‘partnership parenting’ thing really positive for our relationship. My wife and I accept that we have different parenting styles and try to use this as a strength rather than focusing on our weaknesses.”

Biggest professional accomplishment: “We’re at a place where people are looking to NYC Dads Group to see how we’re moving the conversation forward on active, nurturing and involved fathers. Through our voice, which includes our blog, our dads on the ground, physical meet-up group and speaking engagements, we can shout from the rooftops that dads can be just as nurturing as moms.”
