Greenwood Trails Summer Camp just won a Totally Awesome Award for Coolest Summer Camp for Kids in New York. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!
Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Coolest Summer Camp for Kids” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Greenwood Trails Summer Camp: Our personal attention to each and every child. We are a small enough camp that we get to know all of our kids individually, so we can give them the support they need to have an amazing experience with us. We also have shorter sessions, which allow new kids to experience camp for two weeks and often what happens is that they either want to stay at camp for another session, or go home and want to come for 4 or 6 weeks the next summer!
RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
GTSC: We take fun seriously! We are very intentional about making sure each child has an impactful and enriching experience. There’s a lot of brainstorming, meetings and training that happen behind the scenes to make sure our kids get the most out of camp and have the best summer of their lives every year.
RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
GTSC: My family has been running camps and schools for over 40 years. My brother and I had been running our day camp in New York together since 1994. Having gone to overnight camp ourselves, we always appreciated the value of what a good overnight camp can do for kids. But it was after spending time in South Africa volunteering at a camp for at risk kids that I really appreciated the tremendous life changing impact overnight camp can have. We started Greenwood Trails a few years later.
RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
GTSC: During the summer, my staff and I work tirelessly around the clock, seven days a week. Coffee is a very important source of energy every day!
RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
GTSC: When a parent told me that Greenwood Trails was truly the best thing to ever happen to her son, my eyes teared up. We work hard to give kids amazing summers, and when I see a life changed for the better, new friendships made, campers achieving things they never thought possible, and I know that we had something to do with that, it’s extremely rewarding. It’s those moments that make all the hard work worth it.
RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
GTSC: All the time I have to spend away from directly working with the kids and staff in order to do the “unfun” stuff like dealing with insurance, finances, state regulations, etc. BUT I know it all comes with the territory!
RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
GTSC: Spending time with my family, playing with my two daughters, and laughing with my amazing team, even when things get tough.
RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
GTSC: Definitely the power to help make a positive difference in kids lives!
RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
GTSC: For both parenting and owning a business, appreciate the moments and whenever you get stressed, take a step back and realize why it is you do what you do.
RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
GTSC: To not start the overnight camp because it would be too difficult and challenging.
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
GTSC: $100 off for new campers with this code: REDTRI. We are also thanking our current families for voting for us by offering them a $250 discount for referring friends to camp.
