It’s the month of the block party and we’ve got plenty of fun events for the whole family to enjoy together! Head outside and enjoy the (hopefully, finally) nice weather with these free NYC kid-friendly events. Celebrate the diversity of NYC, visit parks you’ve never seen, and generally have a blast with this month’s free events for families in New York City.

Multicultural Festival at Jackie Robinson Park

Celebrate diversity at this inclusive festival, which explores the different cultures of NYC with music and dance performances, art, food, and much more. This community-driven and -focused fest is a blast for all ages and has kid-centric activities like arts and crafts, photo booths, giant video games, and more.

Block Party at Bushwick

Street artists and neighbors alike join in this community block party in Bushwick. The kids can get their faces painted or nom on some food truck goodies while the parents enjoy some beer. Then, check out the live music and fresh art, participate in giveaways and free samples, and even get a free haircut.

Freshkills Park was is three times larger than Central Park but remains relatively unknown except to Staten Island locals. The Discovery Day event hopes to bring the park's great environment to all the boroughs by offering free shuttles from the ferry landing to the park. Plan to spend an entire day here, as there will be fun activities like birdwatching, kite-flying, sunprint art, chime-making, and more. Bring a towel and make it a family picnic day.

The Great Family Treasure Hunt at Randall's Island

Can you navigate without GPS? This event will introduce kids to the joys of treasure-hunting, the traditional way. Maps and compasses will be provided as kids and adults try their hand at orienteering in age-appropriate courses in search of secrets and treasures (and prizes!). Kids can also learn to make their own compass and enjoy a musical puppet show. This event is recommended for kids aged five and up.

Hot Dog Bus at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Free hot dogs for all! This summer, stop by Brooklyn Bridge Park for some functional art. Presented by the Public Art Fund. The adorably overfed Erwin Wurm's Hot Dog Bus will be stationed at the park on weekends and handing out free hotdogs to visitors.

Big Apple BBQ at Madison Square Park

Summer is officially here, and that means it's BBQ season! Visit Madison Square Park for festivities and delicious barbecue, beer and wine, and dessert. While the food isn't free, the event will also have kids' events, live performances, samplers, and more. Expect crowds and mouth-watering smells.

Puerto Rican Day Parade

Join the celebration at "America's largest cultural celebration" at the 61st annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. This year's parade puts emphasis on resilience and rebuilding. As always, there will be tons of music, festive sights and floats, and plenty of spirit. Naturally, expect crowds and a loud atmosphere.

Museum Mile Festival

For three hours only, museums from the Met to El Museo del Barrio are free to enter for anyone. To accompany the festival, there will be music, performances, and kids' events throughout the 23 NYC blocks, all completely car-free and closed off for the event. Stay outside and enjoy the fun or head into any one of the participating museums for an educational and culturally enlightening evening. This event will happen rain or shine!

Concerts in the Park

Take a break and relax with some outdoor music performances, presented by the New York Philharmonics. Make it a picnic and enjoy the live orchestral music in parks (and a few indoor events). Concerts are held in the evenings (except for Staten Island's indoor concert), so bring the older kids to hear some classical music under the stars.

Outdoor Adventures at Central Park

If your kid has ever wanted to try a certain sport or physical activity but never really had the option, now's their chance! At Central Park's Outdoor Adventure event, kids (and adults) can try their hands (and feet) at activities like rock climbing, obstacle races, ziplining, karate, stand-up paddleboarding, and tons more! All events are free but lines may get long so come early. Some events also require a waiver to be signed by a guardian for anyone under 18 years of age.

Summer Kickoff at Rockaway Beach
