Do you ever feel like Williamsburg is just a little too cool for you and your kids? While this Brooklyn ‘hood has become a haven for hipsters and their baby hipsters (maybe your brood is even one of these chic families we’re so envious of), there’s a new cool kid on the block that even non-skinny jean wearing mamas should visit: Allegria Boutique. One step into this new boutique will make you feel hip, even if your skinny jeans are collecting dust in the back of your closet. We won’t tell.
What’s the deal with Allegria?
The brainchild of Lula and Brooklyn mama Melanie, Allegria is part creative space, part boutique. With so many parents opting to raise kids in or near Manhattan, Lula and Melanie recognized the need for a boutique that spoke to the urban family. The space is totally fun and inviting with hand-decorated walls and creative upcycled vintage furniture, creative reflections of the two entrepreneurs.
What you’ll find there
Maybe you’re tired of the same brands and goods, or maybe you just want to score a gem without having to dig through racks at your local consignment shop. Either way, Allegria boutique is a rare find in a city chock full of boutiques. Allegria boasts a collection of goods from around the globe, as well as from local artisans right in the Tri-state area. Whether you’re looking for clothing and accessories or decor and toys, there’s something for everyone at Allegria.
A recent sampling of kids toys and apparel include Goose Grease wooden toys, locally designed MUNY bedding and quilts, Blu Pony Vintage clothes, Tiny Giraffe wooden toys, Lille Huset doll houses, and Bear Feet baby shoes. Plus, if you’re strolling by your kids are bound to notice the boutique’s chic window display where you’ll find crocheted cakes (they were originally handmade by Lula for an installation at Playtime NY) and maybe even a sparkly town made of recycled cardboard boxes during the holidays. Lula and Melanie are working on a Valentine’s Day themed window display, which will be revealed soon.
Why it’s worth a trip on the L train
We’ve all been to those boutiques that say they’re kid-friendly, but when your kiddos accidentally knock over a display or run around in an impromptu game of cat and mouse you get the stare. Yeah, you know, that one. Sure, Allegria is chic, but they are indeed kid-friendly. The store boasts comfortable sofas where you can take a load off (or nurse), as well as toys for the kids to play with.
Insider Tip: While the store is stroller friendly (and even “changing diapers”-friendly), the boutique doesn’t feature its own private bathroom. The owners pointed out that the building itself has a bathroom in the event of an “I need to potty this very instant” moment.
Yes, there’s more than just clothes and apparel
In February, Allegria will expand their offerings and feature creative workshops and classes for kids and parents that incorporate art, drama and music. The two women also have their own work station in the store, which your fam should definitely check out. There the store owners design and create products for display and sale.
