A Haven for Sweet Tooths Big and Small

This time of year we’re always looking to stay warm and cozy. But where can you retreat from the windy streets and chilly playgrounds without getting a major case of cabin fever? Escape to Nunu Chocolates on Atlantic Avenue near Boerum Hill and stay for a while. You’ll get your delicious cozy on here and some built-in entertainment, too. Nunu’s flagship store and cafe is the perfect afternoon pit stop to rest your legs, get creative, and indulge all your senses in, you guessed it, chocolate. Nunu founders and new parents Andy Laird and Justine Pringle are all about family time now that they have a squirmy infant of their own. They’ve outfitted the cafe for kiddos and have added birthday parties and activities to their offerings.

Catering to Little Ones
We love the kid-level chalkboard up front for an impromptu art session, pint-sized table and chairs for tired toddlers, and old school board games for good ol’ fashioned low-tech entertainment. Put those smartphones away, it’s time to play and indulge all the senses in pure chocolate fun. While you’re enjoying your own chocolate, pair it with a craft microbrew or glass of wine – they’ve coordinated selections to complement.

A Room with a Chocolate View
In the back of the cozy café is a huge glass window where you and the kids can watch confections being hand-dipped and packaged into their signature blue and brown boxes. It’s amazing what can get done in such a teensy kitchen! If you’re lucky, the front-row seat action might turn into an invitation to taste-test a chocolate fresh off the line.

An Out-of-the-Chocolate-Box Birthday Party
At the request of foodie parents in the hood, Nunu Chocolates has started hosting birthday parties and group activities that have been a hit! Kiddos don their pastry chef toques to make a chocolate pizza with sweet topping or dip their own caramels and graham crackers into chocolate to take home as favors. Nunu caters activities to different age groups from 4 year olds on up to tweens or a group of young-at-heart adults. Call the flagship store for more details.

Must-Try Treats
Of course we have to share our favorite picks at Nunu with you. It was a lot of work to try them all, but someone had to do it! The frozen mocha (sipping chocolate and blue bottle coffee!) is a must for an afternoon pick-me-up and will have you saying Serendipity 3, who? For sweet and salty lovers, the chocolate-covered potato chips will hit the spot. Caramel fans will find plenty to sample, with four different kinds on offer. The kids should definitely try the classic milk chocolate bar, the newest addition to Nunu after they’ve already proved they excel at the dark stuff.

Where to Find Nunu
There are scores of grocers, artisanal food shops and specialty boutiques carrying the good stuff. Later this spring, Nunu will be at Madison Square Eats. Definitely make a visit to this outdoor food truck festival and stop by the playground afterwards. Check out the Nunu’s web site for the latest places to scoop up the best chocolates in New York City, ahem, the United States!  To prove it, , no small feat.
