Calling all makers, tinkerers, experimenters and innovators! After several years of popping up around the city and spreading the gospel and fun of making things, The Makery — which describes itself as “part shop, part workshop, part ‘exploreground’ ” — has put down roots and is STEAM-ing things up! See where they’ve set up shop!

From Pop-Up to Permanent Playground
Co-founded by a crew of three fellow designers and educators, The Makery started in 2012 as a pop-up-style educational center appearing in surprising spaces from bodegas to boutiques.

But it wasn’t until this past May that The Makery found its new, permanent nest in a refurbished warehouse in South Slope, Brooklyn. Featuring a 3D printer and scanner, art installations, microcontrollers, and endless drawers of tinkering supplies, this space is built for big imaginations. Almost like a big play room for all ages, The Makery is set up to provide access to tools, guidance and inspiration.

For Every Imagination and Skill Level
The Makery is geared toward creators of all experience levels and interests ages nine and up.  “We aim to make hands-on STEAM — science, technology, engineering, art, and math — curriculum fun and accessible,” says cofounder Hsing Wei. One of the guiding credos of The Makery is that “the future needs people who can creatively make,” and classes are kept small to make sure students get plenty of individualized attention from instructors.

Make and Take
Each program at the Makery is dedicated to one project and integrates design, play, applicable technology-building skills and a take-home product.  Examples include a programmed wearable that lights up, A 3D model of oneself and an electronic game students make from scratch.

Ready, Set, Make!
As The Makery has settled into its new digs, it’s  been home to several STEAM youth camps this summer. And, it holds a unique, intergenerational workshop every Sunday afternoon from 1 -4:30pm. September will usher in an after school program geared toward middle school youth.

To stay updated on all the happenings at The Makery, head to its web site, where you can also register for classes and workshops. One note: remember that many programs at The Makery are BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop).

Group Games and Making
Want to try out bot battling or a circuit board game challenge with a group of family or friends? You can also book The Makery for a customized, two-hour private group experience for 6-22 people.
