In most families with young kids, grilled cheese sandwiches are a menu staple! Sometimes there’s just nothing better than that comforting combination of butter, bread and melted cheese. For families in Portland, explore these spots for grabbing a grilled cheese when you’re out and about!

The Grilled Cheese Grill
Undoubtedly the hottest grilled cheese spot in Portland is… a bus? With two locations in Portland (one in a school bus and one in a double-decker bus), The Grilled Cheese Grill specializes in all grilled cheese, all of the time.  Kids will enjoy the classic sammy they love (the even have one named The Preschooler that has the crusts cut off!), while parents can indulge in a gourmet grilled cheese. Add on some chips or a cup of tomato soup – yum!   Two locations – Northeast 11th at Alberta and Southeast 28th at Ankeny

Brunchbox
With the growing popularity of food carts in Portland right now, it’s not surprising that another grilled cheese favorite comes from Brunchbox. Located in Food Cart Alley, their grilled cheese is served on two pieces of thick and buttery Texas toast, making a delicious sandwich! For larger appetites, you can get any of their other sandwiches made in between two grilled cheese sandwiches! We recommend calling your order in ahead of time to avoid making little ones wait too long.   Southwest Fifth Avenue at Southwest Stark Street in Food Cart Alley

Arleta Liberty Bakery and Café
The slogan at Arleta Liberty Bakery and Café is “Because good food is long overdue…” and we think that their grilled cheese sandwich is a great solution to that problem! The sandwich itself is simple, but delicious and you can add a slice of tomato for little ones who will let you sneak it in! We love that you can choose your own cheese (provolone, cheddar or jack) and that they make their own ketchup – perfect for dipping!  5513 Southeast 72nd at Harold

Eastside Deli
This classic-style deli is a great family-friendly spot to grab a tasty grilled cheese lunch! Kids will love filling out their own order card with their name at the top and checking off the ingredients they’d like in their grilled cheese (all fresh and local, by the way!). Eastside Deli is also a good option if you have family members with special food needs – there are even vegan options at this deli!   Three locations — Downtown, on Southeast Hawthorne, and on Northeast Lombard

Where do you take your kids when they are craving grilled cheese, but you don’t feel like busting out the ingredients at home? Do they like something to dip their sammy in – ketchup or soup?
