Drama Classes for Mini-Thespians in Portland

Oh Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Okay, maybe that’s taking things a little bit too far, but Portland parents with mini-thespians at home who are looking for somewhere to let them express their dramatic sides will appreciate this list of drama and theater programs for kids in the Portland area. Get your stage lefts and your stage rights figured out and check out these cool classes and workshops.

Lakewood Center for the Arts, Lake Oswego, Or
Ages: Four and up

Class offerings: Multiple classes for kids of all ages, including classes on theater, storytelling, film work and more. They’ve also just added a chorus class for those who love to belt out some tunes! Note: some classes build on each other or have prerequisite auditions.

Enrollment: Classes begin in winter and fall. Registration available online and in person.

Multnomah Arts Center, Portland, Or
Ages: Two and up

Class offerings: Classes vary slightly each quarter, but in general, MAC offers weekly classes on creative theater for the younger children and more focused programs for older children, including classes based on a specific book and the details of putting on an actual live production.

Enrollment: New classes begin each quarter. Visit the Portland Parks and Recreation website for registration information. They also offer great camps over winter and spring breaks that typically incorporate theater.

Northwest Children’s Theater and School, Portland, Or
Ages: Three and up

Class offerings: Classes are taught in the evenings and on the weekends, broken down by specialty – from musical theater to specific skill classes like improv – as well as by age and experience. Class sizes are kept small for the best level of comfort and interaction for the kids.

Enrollment: Available year-round with longer sessions during the academic year and shorter camps during the summer months.

Oregon Children’s Theatre, Portland, Or
Ages: Four and up

Class offerings: Perfect for both first-time actors and seasoned theater kids, they offer classes and workshops for every age and ability including make believe and superhero classes for the littler ones and more skill specific classes for older children.

Ages: All children are welcome

Class offerings: Drama Club classes are focused on the creativity and imagination of the kids that are in each specific class – the focus for each class is born through the vision of the children on the first day, with direction from the teacher, of course.

Ages: Three and up
