Created by food science enthusiast (and owner) Chad Draizin, Fifty Licks is one of the Portland area’s most unique and yummy ice cream shops, offering cold scoops and icy sips that will elicit both surprise and smiles. From classics like your basic chocolate to boozy flavors, drinks and cocktail concoctions like ButterSCOTCH—you can be sure there is something for everyone in your crew. They even have vegan-friendly options like Rose City Lemonade and Coconut Lemond Saffron, and if anyone in your group has a nut allergy—never fear—this shop is completely nut free!
In the Beginning
Fifty Licks got its start in 2009 as a food truck that would show up at various events and farmer’s markets. It’s focus on using real eggs, fresh ingredients and adding booze to some of its options caught the attentions of ice-cream-lovers both young and old and eventually led to the opening of the original shop at 2011 SE Clinton St.
Fifty Licks real claim to fame is being one of the few ice cream shops in Oregon that makes their custard base by hand, from scratch. How? They begin by slowly simmering cream, sugar and real cage-free egg yolks into a luscious custard and the result is a treat that is rich, smooth, and of course delicious. This style of ice cream is referred to as crème glacée which is sweet but also allows the flavors of each carefully selected ingredient to be tasted.

The Fifty Licks creator frequents the Portland Farmers Market on a quest to find the most flavorful fruits and berries to mix into their funny, fresh flavors. When the seasons change and call for something “warmer,” they change up their menu and focus on themed, comforting flavors.
While this shop offers the classic scoops and bowls the menu options don’t stop there. They also offer the Affogato Cubano, which is freshly brewed Cuban coffee over a a scoop of ice cream creating a bitter but sweet and caffeinated treat that will help mom and dad keep up with the kiddos. Trying to avoid a messy mouth? Get little ones a shake. Parents can even indulge in a Beer Float, which consists of Boulder Brewing’s Shake Chocolate Porter with a scoop of your favorite flavor.
