The Kenton neighborhood in north Portland has been undergoing a revival over the last few years — think of the Kenton Library, the über kid-friendly restaurants and the eco-friendly, wider sidewalks lining the streets. And nothing says, “Hey, this neighborhood has arrived!” more than its own street fair. So, mark your calendars and get ready for spring with soapbox-style coaster car races, live entertainment, crafts, carnival-style games, pony rides and more at the Fifth Annual Kenton Street Fair.
Zoom! A Cavalcade of Coaster Cars
Kenton Street Fair is now in its fifth annual installment, which means the organizers have it down to a science. To kick things off, creative, handmade coaster cars will race down N. Denver. This year, the cars will actually be competing against the clock in timed races, instead of just rolling down the street.
Classic Cars, Crafts & Pony Rides
Afterward, the Kenton ‘hood’s business district will have over 90 vendors lining the streets, as well as the 5th annual classic car show. The lot behind Wells Fargo is dedicated to kiddo fun. Think pony rides, face painting, rock walls, carnival games, a petting zoo, skateboarding classes and demos, and woodworking (imagine wooden hand-sized semi trucks!).
Dancing in the Street
Three all-ages music stages will be rockin’ with continuous music, and dancing in the street is highly encouraged. One stage, located in the kids’ activity lot, is dedicated to kids’ performers, like Circus Cascadia and Kemba Shannon Dance Center’s dancers. Keep an eye on the fair’s schedule page for entertainment updates.
Yum – Tasty Street Food
As with all street festivals, there will be no shortage of food to feed your little hungry birds. Posie’s Café is located on N. Denver and has sweet and savory baked goods for all — even the gluten-sensitive crowd. Pizza Fino will serve gourmet pie to the masses, and food carts and booths hawking everything from ice cream to sausages will fill rumbling tummies.
From year to year, the fair gets better and better and new activities are added. This year, new activities include an outdoor boxing demonstration (in a boxing ring!) gym tours, demos and raffles by Sweet Science Boxing, as well as a street yoga lesson.
