A team of Portland creatives—award-winning writer Elizabeth Rusch (winner of an Oregon Book Award, an Oregon Literary Fellowship and two Oregon Spirit Awards) and genius newcomer illustrator Mike Lawrence—will launch their debut graphic novel Muddy Max: The mystery of Marsh Creek at the Fremont Fest in front of A Children’s Place Bookstore August 2, 2014, 12 pm – 4 pm. This homegrown graphic novel, inspired by the muddy, mucky trails of Forest Park, offers kids age 7-12 a delightful mix of fantasy and family foibles, superheroics and slime, mud and mystery. Once Upon a Time Family Theatre is a magical mix of theatrical simplicity and grand storytelling for kids and their families. There's always a slight twist to the traditional story that keeps these productions fresh. This month join us to see a unique tale about the priceless gift of laughter. The princess Who Never Smiled is appropriate for all ages! Though simply produced, these delightful and engaging productions will soon have everyone fully absorbed in the interaction of live theatre. Rox in Sox, Oregon’s newest family festival of music and reading, will hit Lake Oswego again from 10am to 4 pm on Saturday, August 2nd. The lineup of music, author readings and other festivities is growing now at www.roxinsox.org. Admission is free with a donation of new shoes, socks or books for kids in need. Last year’s Rox in Sox attracted more than 1,800 people. In all, festival volunteers collected 1,003 pairs of socks, 69 pairs of shoes and 483 books, all of which have been distributed to children in Oregon, Jamaica and Kenya. Children's book authors and illustrators will share their work with kids, and some of the top stars in today's indie family music scene will perform interactive shows. Local performers include Red Yarn, School of Rock, and Aaron Nigel Smith with his One World Chorus of kids. Nationally acclaimed "kindie rock" stars Recess Monkey, The NOt-Its! and Secret Agent 23 Skidoo will also appear. Presented by One World Chorus, Northwestern Mutual, the City of Lake Oswego, and the Lake Oswego Public Library, Rox in Sox will offer a host of family-friendly activities and services, as well as summery refreshments.
