Who needs to jet set to a tropical island when Portland has plenty of excitement, like tram rides with a bird’s-eye view, berry patches and sandy beach trips within a stone’s throw of home? Read on to discover eight close-to-home adventures that’ll make your summer unforgettable.

5. Chill Out at a Fountain

Or rather, in a fountain. Kids flock to the Jamison Square Fountain in the Pearl District for one reason: it’s awesome! Wade, duck and dash as the water cascades over flat rocks into a perfect wading pool. There’s a grassy area for spectators, but getting your feet wet is more fun. The fountain can get crowded on hot days, so go early to stake out your spot. Let your wee one wade, then wander over to Hot Lips Pizza or one of the awesome eateries that dot the Pearl area.

Other top fountain options? Kenton Park (8417 N Brandon Ave.) has a wonderful play structure, picnic area and splash pad; Waterfront Park (Naito Pkwy. between SW Harrison St. & NW Glisan St.) is a local and tourist fave with huge fountains to play in.
