Valentine’s Day might focus on hearts and love for couples, but you and your child can still join in on the fun! Consider taking your kid out for a one-on-one date with just one parent, for some extra special time together. Make it feel real by dressing up and asking first date questions (like favorite foods/hobbies/vacations). Your kids will revel in the super special attention and love! Try our four date ideas below for a great time.

Go on a tour of Portland’s best candy stores. But pace yourself– there’s a whole lot! Fill up on gorgeous handmade sweets like the colorful Dreams Come Chew at Quin and chocolate bon bon at Alma, or fill a whole bag of gummy goodies at Rocket Fizz. Check out the whole list here. Afterwards, work off the sugar rush with ice skating at Lloyd Center Ice Rink (recently reopened after 2016 renovations).

Take your kids out for a gourmet slice at a local pie-slinger like Life of Pie Pizzeria on N. Williams. With a wood-fired oven baking pies with house-made mozzarella, and a full menu of other hits like spaghetti, the date’s sure to be a hit. And if you catch their happy hour (it’s seven hours long, so it should be a cinch) you and your little date can both get the $5 Margherita pizza, and save some money for popcorn at the movies at Regal Lloyd Center!

Tea cocktails are available for the adults: fake English accent not required, but welcomed.

Snow and hot chocolate are always romantic (and kid-friendly!), and they’re in full supply at Timberline Lodge. A beautiful 1930’s-era building perched on Mt. Hood, it’s the gateway to hitting the slopes on skis. But even the shortest hike around the lodge warrants hot chocolate by the fire! Keep an eye out for Heidi or Bruno, two of Timberline’s resident St. Bernard dogs, trained for alpine rescue and also for cuddles.
