San Francisco

MakeArt Family Day
Get into the spirit of Raw Design by creating all of your own art materials, from scratch at the Museum of Craft and Design. Experiment with how to make milk paint, modeling clay, rainbow crayons and more. Take your creations to the “Test Tent” in the parklet to try out your custom supplies, then stick around for a special opening day exhibition walk-through with guest curator Glenn Adamson (2-3 p.m.). 42nd Union Street Music Festival
Enjoy over 24 live bands sprinkled throughout the five blocks of the festival including Jazz, Blues, Country, Bluegrass and local bands. Food vendors, arts and craft exhibitors, beverage gardens and more will take over this area where historic Victorians have been transformed into popular boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. This Festival Is Cherry-Licious
There’s no better time to sink your teeth into a handful of spring cherries than San Leandro’s Annual Cherry Festival. The one-day downtown event combines dozens of cherry vendors with a pie contest, food trucks as well as crafts, games and bounce houses for kids. Head to the main stage for major jams and all the dancing you’d like. Sat. Event details.

All Aboard the Katie Train!
Visit Ardenwood Farm for this once-a-year celebration of “Katie,” the little green locomotive! Ride the Katie train, play engineer with wooden trains, build with jumbo waffle blocks and more. The historic Patterson House will be open for tours conducted by docents in 19th century costumes (purchase tickets at the Patterson House)—a special tour for families with children ages six and under is offered at 11:30 a.m., space is limited. First Friday Family Night
Swing into the weekend with music, science, food and fun! On the first Friday of every month, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., parents and kids celebrate together at CuriOdyssey. Dance to San Francisco soul, funk and jazz of the 60’s and 70’s from Jason Movrich of Big Blu Soul Revue. Purchase dinner from Fletch’s and beer or wine at a cash bar. Biggest Little Air Show
San Carlos Airport will close to regular traffic (10:30 a.m.-noon) to allow realistic jet- and propeller-powered model aircraft to roll down the runway and into the sky to take their part in a unique aerial extravaganza including aerobatic helicopters, drones, quadrotors and more. Then enjoy drone demos from noon-1 p.m. at the Hiller Aviation Museum. Sat. Event details. 

Sunnyvale Art and Wine Festival
Enjoy a weekend of gorgeous arts and crafts, local live bands, kids rides, wine and wonderful food in Sunnyvale. Sat.-Sun. Event details. 

South Bay

This Mountain Musical Fest Is a Real Roar
Local artists and musicians will fill the forest with sweet tunes at the Redwood Mountain Faire in the Santa Cruz Mountains at Roaring Camp. At this weekend-long woodsie festival visitors are treated to non-stop music on two stages as well as a children’s activities nook, face painting, bounce houses, locally-made arts and crafts as well as food and Santa Cruz-made beer and wines. Family Lunada

Visit ACR’s Martin Griffin Preserve in Stinson Beach
Plant your feet at Audubon Canyon Ranch’s Martin Griffin Preserve every Saturday. There’s plenty to do, including hiking eight miles of trails, picnicking under the redwoods, checking out wildlife. hanging with nature guides, playing in the curiosity room and shopping in the nature bookstore. Go Zen with the Kids at the Green Gulch Farm
San Francisco Zen Center’s Green Gulch farm is a beautiful retreat from the hectic city life and the first Sunday of most months there is a special talk and program just for kids.
