Come cheer on a fleet of colorful 40-foot dragon boats as they race to the beat of Chinese drums through the SF Bay at the 19th Annual Kaiser Permanente San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival, Sept. 20-21 at Treasure Island! This two-day, admission-free festival features family-friendly live entertainment, cultural performers, fabulous food, and fun merchandise. Kids of all ages can enjoy free games with prizes, arts and crafts in the Flax Creative Arts Area, carnival rides, a rock climbing wall, obstacle course, fire engine, face painting, airbrush tattoos, animal balloons, roving dragon characters and more at the ever-popular Dragon Land. New this year is the interactive Microsoft Stores-sponsored Land of Smart Kids Area, featuring science, technology and math-oriented activities, fun with Surface Pro 3 tablet and Xbox One, and even coding! Parking and admission is free, and complimentary shuttles run both days between the festival and locations in San Francisco.

Get eye to eye with a butterfly in the exhibit Butterflies & Blooms coming to the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park this spring and summer. The popular exhibit returns to San Francisco’s beloved greenhouse, transforming its Special Exhibits gallery into a a beautiful and intimate cottage garden aflutter with hundreds of butterflies on the wing. Walk amongst a wide variety of brightly colored blossoms, watching (and sometimes ducking!) as butterflies like magnificent monarchs, swallowtails, painted ladies and more fly from flower to flower drinking nectar and getting covered in pollen. It’s a fascinating demonstration of plant pollination in action. The Butterfly Bungalow in the middle of the gallery also allows you to observe the pupae in their chrysalis stage. You never know, you may be lucky enough to catch the moment when one of these winged beauties emerges. Visitors receive a free butterfly identification booklet, including tips on growing your own delightful butterfly garden plus insight into these wondrous, age-old symbiotic garden relationships.
