Bay Area families with food allergies and diet restrictions have a new restaurant to add to their dining rotation. True Food Kitchen, a national chain that bases its menu on the principles of Dr. Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet, recently opened its doors in Walnut Creek. Offering healthy dishes influenced by Mediterranean, Asian and Californian cuisines, True Food has something for everyone with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. Spoiler alert: the result is pure deliciousness.
Nutritional Bliss + A Sports Bar
Located in Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza, the nearly 200-seat eatery boasts an elevated, earthy layout, complete with ample greenery, modern fixtures and plenty of stroller-friendly space to navigate through fellow diners. All True Food Kitchens are equipped with environmentally conscious features including high-efficiency kitchens, low voltage LED lighting, reclaimed wood floors and ultra-low-flow water faucets. A meticulously prepped, exposed kitchen showcases pizza dough tossing and a bounty of fresh seasonal ingredients. From a full bar with two flatscreen TVs (live sports + nutrition, anyone?) to a roomy outdoor dining area, the welcoming space suits everything from family dinners to impromptu date nights. Which leads us to the mouthwatering cocktail menu…we’re fans of the Thai Ginger Martini and the Chamomile Cooler—both so good! Local beer and wine are also available, along with plenty of non-alcoholic choices. Pomegranate Chia Limeade anyone?Don’t Call it Mall Food
The menu has satisfying options for meat-eaters and vegans alike. From the Grass-Fed Burger with umami mushroom and caramelized onions to an addictive Vegan Butternut Squash Pizza—the offerings do not disappoint. Sandwiches and burgers come with tasty sides; pick from a nutrient-dense kale salad or a comforting sweet potato hash. Tip: order a combination to get the best of both (side) worlds. Kids have a surprising list of choices here with portions that will, more likely than not, yield leftovers. Make a Day of It
With holiday madness and shopping to-dos on the brink, we suggest making a True Food Kitchen stop after or between checking a few folks off of your gift list. The shopping center includes a Gymboree, Janie and Jack and Hanna Andersson (as well as a Soul Cycle right next store to the restaurant if you want to make a wellness day out of it). Reservations are accepted for brunch, lunch and dinner, but walk-ins are almost always accommodated as well.
