If you have a tween in your life, you know just how hard it can be to find fun, functional and interesting clothes and gear for this age group. Enter Orange Bird! This big sister store to the favorite Hayes Valley kid shop Fiddlesticks just opened a few doors down and the tweens are already saving up their babysitting money to shop there. Read on to see why!

Be You, Fly Free

Store owner Elizabeth Leu started Fiddlesticks a decade ago to cater to kids up to age 10. As her customers started to age, she found that she was getting more and more requests for sizes beyond 10. When a small store just a few down from Fiddlesticks opened up, she jumped at the chance to tap into the tween market. It was then that Orange Bird was born.

Everything from the store name to logo was thoughtfully designed for this tween demographic. The name “Orange Bird” originates from the bird in the Fiddlesticks logo. The bird at Orange Bird is in flight—symbolizing the transition that kids go through during these years—and you can see the store motto of “Be You, Fly Free” throughout. The logo features an elegant cursive, which is a dying art in schools these days. Be sure to check out the amazing mural in the back dressing room that’s selfie ready!

The Clothes

Orange Bird offers clothing for kids ages 8-14 in what Elizabeth calls “fast fashion.” With clothing trends changing so quickly, she wanted to offer what is hot at reasonable prices. Featured brands include the ever-popular Splendid as well as Tractr that offers stretchy jeans in styles that kids love. The plaids, prints and faux fur from Hayden is also a customer favorite. There’s a smattering of special-occasion looks available but most of the clothes offered are every day, fashion-forward styles.

The Gear

In addition to clothing, Orange Bird offers tons of the trinkets that are so popular with this age group. There’s a whole wall of bath and makeup products, every unicorn item that you could ever want and oversized food plushies all over the store. Mini disco balls, phone accessories and Pusheen products are also a hit with this age group.
