Belgian or buttermilk, sweet or savory, everyone has a favorite waffle. But have you tried a Hong Kong street waffle or cornmeal waffle topped with apple cider syrup? Waffles are great any time of day, so try one soon from our list of favorites below. Plus, all these locations are kid-friendly so you can dine in comfort!

Best Chicken and Waffles
We love Tanya Holland’s modern take on the soulful classic “chicken and waffles” that put Brown Sugar Kitchen in West Oakland on the national culinary map. BSK focuses on gourmet comfort food made with the highest quality organic and local ingredients.  Holland’s signature cornmeal waffle is crispy and airy, yet satisfying and scrumptious.  You can order the waffle alone topped with the apple cider syrup and brown sugar butter made in house, but we suggest ordering it with the rosemary-scented fried chicken. The chicken adds an herbaceous note to the pairing along with the symphony of flavors and textures. This is the perfect place to visit for big brunch elitists and little breakfast lovers.

Best Waffle Variations
You know a place that only serves breakfast and lunch will offer some serious waffles. Stacks is the place to visit if you’re hankering for a platter of thick waffles topped or filled with everything from bananas to blueberries. Our favorite is the savory Bacon Waffle – it’s filled with diced bacon bits and adds a salty kick! Or if the kids want dessert for breakfast there’s the infamous Chocolate Divine, a waffle filled with semi-sweet chocolate chips and topped with whipped cream and shaved Ghirardelli chocolate. There are three locations in San Francisco, Burlingame, and Menlo Park.

Best Traditional Waffle
For those waffle fanatics who are looking for the perfect union of crunchy exterior and soft, warm deliciousness inside, look no further than those at Home Plate. This Cow Hollow/Marina institution has been serving up delicious breakfasts for over 25 years. Try the “Home-Run Special” and sample a delicious diner-plate sized waffle, eggs, and your choice of Bacon, Ham, Turkey, Pork Sausage Links, Homemade Chicken Sausage Patties or Andouille Sausage. It sure sounds like a lot of food, but the buttermilk waffles are definitely the highlight–these guys are light and fluffy with just a hint of sweetness (some are convinced that they are made with cake flour…they’re THAT good!)

Best Waffle from a Truck
Belgian Waffle Mania, the waffle truck that hits the Civic Center Farmers Market on Wednesdays is all about rich, buttery and decadent waffles — what’s not to love? You need to go between peak hours to avoid lines but the simple and warm icing sugar-dusted Belgian waffle is worth an hour of extra workout. Red Tricycle writer and mom Laure Latham had a chat with the guy once in French and he told her that they get the batter shipped from Belgium. Now it’s possible it’s only the dough starter and not the whole batter but the result is still completely addictive. Laure hears the Nutella waffle is equally good – add a couple hours of treadmill please.
