Pier 39 is the heart of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, and it is packed with dozens of options for food and fun (and our very favorite urban aquarium). And this October, the Pier is turning 39 years old (although we insist it doesn’t look a day over 21). The celebrations ramp up this month as the big day approaches, so check out all the events below and be sure to stop by (and scoop up some of the freebies that are on offer.)
While the Pier is one of the top tourist spots in the city, we locals love to drop by and pretend we are on vacation every once in a while. And there’s no better time to pop by and say hi than the bustling pier’s birthday celebration. Beginning this weekend, there is a special event every eek, from outdoor movies to free chowder to a roller disco. We have the full list right here.
September 1, Chowder Day!
Forget cake, chowder in a bread bowl is how real San Franciscans celebrate birthdays. The first 39 people to present this special coupon at Chowders on Level 1 will receive one (1) free clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. To download the coupon, click here.
September 8, 70s Roller Disco Party
Party like it’s 1978 with free roller-skating in the PIER 39 Entrance Plaza from 4-10 p.m.. Bring your own skates and gear or rent them for free on the spot. Be sure to stop by the Museum of Craft & Design booth to make cool crafts from 5-8 p.m.
September 22, Fall Beer Pour
Stroll the pier and stop by participating businesses to enjoy beer tastings, exclusive discounts, and live music from 4-8 p.m. Purchase a ticket ($20) here for beer tastings, discounts at participating businesses, a commemorative beer glass and more.
September 29, Outdoor Movie Night
Grab your blankets and head to the Bay End of the pier for outdoor Movie Night! At 7:15pm, settle in for a free screening of The Pursuit of Happyness, which was filmed in San Francisco.
October 4, Pier 39 Turns 39
October 4 is the pier’s actual birthday!
October 6, 7 and 8, Fleet Week
Fleet Week features a parade of ships, ship tours and an impressive air show that includes the Blue Angels. PIER 39 joins the celebration with live entertainment from local and military bands, interactive exhibits, military vehicles and displays, and more.
October 14, Pier 39’s Birthday Bash!
Ready for a party? From 5-10 p.m., enjoy roving glow-in-the-dark entertainment, DJs, a silent disco and a live performance by The Party Crashers. At 9 p.m., the evening culminates with a spectacular fireworks show over San Francisco Bay.
You can even watch Pier 39 being born: Check of this video from the grand opening back in 1978.
