The YWCA Santa Monica/Westside celebrates fathers and father figures with a dance this Valentine’s Weekend, proceeds going toward Girls Athletics scholarships. The tradition began in 2011, when the YWCA team saw a need in the community for an event that encourages fathers (and father figures) to spend quality time with their daughters. “It is crucial that we recognize the importance of the relationship between a little girl and her dad. Studies show that this relationship is one of the most influential in the development of a girl’s self-esteem, self-image, confidence and opinions of men,” says Julia Miele, Executive Director of the YWCA Santa Monica/Westside. Embracing this community need, the YWCA created the Valentine’s Day Father & Daughter Dance. Dads put on their best suits (some even wear tuxes!), and take their daughters out for a fun night of dancing and games. It is a community-wide celebration appropriate for girls of all ages—toddler to teen—and includes a raffle, photobooth, snacks and popular music from the past five decades. What makes the event even more meaningful is that it is a fundraiser for a great cause. “The money we raise with this dance is going toward scholarships that give girls in our community an opportunity to participate in team sports. It’s a beautiful thing!” says Hilton Brown, Athletics Director of the YWCA Santa Monica/Westside.

Early Childhood Matters invites all dads to build a healthy, life-long connection with their children, especially in the first five years of their child's life. Our fatherhood workshops invite all dads to take a journey into the brain, emotions, needs and questions of their children in order to become more effective and connected parents. We also look at questions centered around the role(s) of dads today amidst the pressures and pace of the modern world. Buddy Dad vs. The Disciplinarian In this workshop we take a look at "fatherhood" throughout history - particularly around the theme of discipline. We discuss setting limits, managing consequences, and the nature, strategies, and goals of an "authoritative" parenting style.
