If there’s one way that motherhood can change you, it’s by giving you a new found appreciation for everything your mom did for you that you suddenly understand on a whole new level. With the birth of her new baby, Serena Williams took to social media to share just how much she appreciates her own mom.
Posting on reddit, Serena penned a long and loving letter to her mom starting with, “You are one of the strongest women I know.” Reflecting on the fact that her newborn daughter has taken after her own looks, Williams wonders if she will face the same judgement and hardships that she did and how, as a mom, she will handle it. Noting that her own mom handled it all with strength and grace, “You are so classy, I only wish I could take your lead. I am trying, though, and God is not done with me yet. I have a LONG way to go, but thank you.”
Williams thanks her mom for being such an amazing role model and hopes that her daughter Alexis Olympia will grow up learning from her own challenges. Finally, she finishes with a request that all new parents can relate to, a plea for help. “Promise me, Mom, that you will continue to help. I’m not sure if I am as meek and strong as you are yet. I hope to get there one day.” It’s not easy raising a baby, even when you are as strong and courageous as Serena Williams and all moms can use help and encouragement along the way.
