An iconic part of your childhood is about to have a BIG birthday: Sesame Street turns 50 this year, and this children’s favorite has plenty to celebrate.

When Sesame Street started way back in 1969 who could have imagined that the show would become the standard that just about all children’s television programming is held to. For the past five decades Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Elmo and the rest of the Muppet-led crew have educated tots around the world. Tackling tough subjects and challenging their young viewers, Sesame Street is nothing short of an institution.

Sesame Workshop’s Chief Executive Officer, Jeffrey D. Dunn, said in a press statement, “Our mission to help kids everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder knows no geographic boundaries. We’re everywhere families are and we never stop innovating and growing. That’s what keeps us timeless.”

What does Sesame Workshop have in-store to mark this major anniversary? To start with, the 50th Sesame Street season will focus on the power of possibilities, helping kiddos to learn from their mistakes while empowering them to take safe risks.

Along with the anniversary season on the small screen, your tot’s favorite characters are going on a nationwide trip—hosting community events in 10 cities around the United States. Oh, but there’s more. Look for new collabs across fashion, lifestyle and other entertainment brands as well as a celeb and fan-focused special social media campaign. The #ThisIsMyStreet campaign will allow fans to showcase their favorite Sesame Street, via social media, memories using the hashtag. So get ready to start tweeting, Instagramming and Facebooking your day away!
