Early literacy experiences are absolutely essential. That’s why you buy your child books, download them onto your tablet and trek out to the library a few times a week. But, not every family has the resources to help their child build a love of books early on. And that’s why Sesame Workshop (you know, the magical people behind Sesame Street) and the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) have come together to announce their new Every Day is a Reading and Writing Day resources. What does that mean? Check out the scoop on this entirely awesome initiative.
In an effort to support early literacy development, the Every Day is a Reading and Writing Day program is bringing free services to children. This includes 100,000 printed copies of the Book Buddies storybook. These illustrated books feature Bert and Ernie, and are available in both English and Spanish. The storybooks will be distributed in the US and the UK through children’s organizations, schools and libraries.
Along with Book Buddies, the initiative will also include Building a Reader. This is a free online professional development course that helps early childhood educators to better teach early literacy skills. It will also help teachers of young children to better understand how to engage families in the learning process.
As part of this initiative, volunteers (from the IICF) will lead early literacy events in the US and the UK during the IICF Week of Giving — October 14-21, 2017.
