Ready to soak up the best of both worlds: the canyon and the coast on a relaxing staycation at The Ranch at Laguna Beach? This nature haven is nestled in the Aliso and Wood Canyons, but a short stroll away you can make a splash in the Pacific Ocean. With family-friendly activities from making s’mores on The Porch, stargazing, drum circles, deer and bird of prey talks and family golf clinics, you’ll want to head to The Ranch for some R&R stat. Read on for more details.
The Ranch at Laguna Beach is a National Geographic Lodge of the World. The Resort earned this title for its “protection of natural heritage, protection of cultural heritage, support for local communities and environmentally friendly practices.” You’ll appreciate the sense of being immersed in and getting to enjoy an up close experience with nature in a setting that doesn’t disrupt the surrounding environment.
Room types range from Canyon Rooms to Creekside Studios or Suites to the property’s tour de force: The Treehouse. Set above the resort and boasting floor to ceiling windows that afford exquisite views, this 1,600 square-foot, family-friendly home away from home sleeps six and features a wrap-around deck, a fully stocked gourmet kitchen, a fridge filled with drinks and snacks and so many more amenities. Rates are $1350+/night, so it’s a splurge for a holiday or special occasion. All of the rooms feature rustic, coastal chic decor and a cool, casual vibe that’s welcoming and comfortable for families.
Golf is the mainstay of The Ranch as it overlooks Ben Brown’s 9-hole golf course. The quiet, serene setting with stunning views at every turn make for a relaxing environment for both learning to play golf or mastering your game. On Saturdays, hotel guests can take advantage of the Family Golf Clinic to learn basic instruction and partake in some friendly competition. The laid-back vibe of the course also lends itself to kids joining parents in the golf cart as they play a round of golf. Golf carts and TaylorMade clubs are available for rental.
Take a dip in The Pond Pool which is saline and heated year-round. There’s a poolside bar where you can order drinks and meals to be delivered to your lounge chair.
Also, just a short walk down the hill (or a quick ride on The Ranch’s complimentary shuttle), you’ll find Aliso Beach Park where there’s a playground and of course, the beach. Body surf, paddleboard or explore the tidepools here or at any of the many beaches dotted along the coastline.
Come evening, head to The Porch, a communal gathering place at The Ranch where you can roast marshmallows and enjoy s’mores and a glass of wine. S’more kits are available for purchase and come with all the fixins’: sticks to roast with, chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers. Your kids will love this!
Have a family game of bocce ball at the court on The Porch. The balls even light up, so you can still enjoy a game at dusk or after sunset.
Cornhole, anyone? Your kiddos will have a ball trying their luck at this super fun outdoor game, which is also set up and ready to enjoy on The Porch.
Additional activities families will flock to: stargazing in the secluded canyon away from the city lights, the Deer Talk which is a family-friendly storytelling event that includes a drum circle and hopefully some deer sightings and the Birds of Prey interactive presentation which highlights the hawks and owls found in the canyon. During the summer months, don’t miss the Junior Ranger summer camp which is complimentary for resort guests and features a variety of programs from gardening to learning about local flora and fauna.
Cozy, inviting and steps away from your room, Harvest restaurant serves up delicious California comfort cuisine that’s crafted with herbs, fruits and vegetables from the resort’s own half-acre Harvest Garden for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You’ll find plenty of kid-friendly faves including options like French toast, a scrambled egg and cheese sandwich and pancakes for breakfast to mac & cheese, quesadilla and chicken fingers for lunch. Parents will appreciate the extensive wine and craft beer list too. Whatever you do, don’t miss the Applewood Smoked Bacon Cinnamon Roll that’s covered in candied bacon and a heavenly maple glaze. It’s big enough to share, so treat the fam to an after-breakfast dessert with this beauty. The restaurant also has a beautiful front deck for outdoor dining with an unbeatable backdrop of the canyon.
