When the kids start bouncing off the walls, parents want nothing more than to take a deep breath and hope nothing in the house is destroyed. What if we told you there’s a place where parents can de-stress while they ruggrats burn off their energy? It turns out there’s a place where you can all safely do both. Grotto Climbing & Yoga recently opened as a climbing gym that doubles as a yoga studio. It’s the perfect way for parents to practice zen while the kiddos burn off energy.

Get Climbing!
The Grotto climbing gym is a 9,000-square-foot facility located in Grantville (near the SDSU College area). Rather than focus on climbs that tower above the ground, Grotto is designed for rock climbing known as bouldering where the walls are low enough that no rope is necessary. The good news is it’s much safer for kids and requires little equipment.

They offer beginner workshops to help get you and your little climbers get started. Each newbie is given a free intro course with the purchase of a day class to make sure you know how to be safe when scaling the walls.

When you arrive, you’ll fill out a waiver regardless of whether you’re there to climb or learn how to be a yogi. Grotto has lots of options when it comes to membership and daily passes. We like that you can get a day pass for kids 13 and under is $13, and little ones under 4 are free with an adult.

Daily passes and memberships include full access to both the climbing walls and yoga classes. It’s an all-in-one deal! You can also purchase shoe rentals for $4, and chalk for $2.

Insider’s Tip: Grotto offers cubbyholes for your valuables like your purse, shoes and car keys, but they’re not locked for protection. Consider leaving anything you don’t seen in the open in your car before coming in.

Namaste
If you’re not interested in learning to climb – and your kids are at an age when they can attend a class on their own — check yourself in to one of the many yoga classes offered throughout the week. From Ashtanga, meditation and Hatha flow, Grotto has yoga classes for every style. We love that they offer mats, straps and other yoga gear so you don’t have to worry about bringing anything from home.

Insider’s Tip: The yoga classes fill up fast and with only one room dedicated to them. Make sure to get there early to get a spot. Also, the noon classes are the most affordable deal at $13. Parking is limited. You can park your car across the street in the trolley lot or down the block at the shopping center.

They Offer Youth Programs, Too
Grotto loves helping kids learn about the sport of rock climbing, so they offer two programs for your young ones to check out. The Youth Climbing Club is for the young’uns that enjoy the sport and want to learn more about it in a safe and welcoming environment, but might not be interested in engaging in climbing in a competitive capacity. The Youth Climbing Team is for the kids that really get into the sport. They’ll learn advanced techniques and build towards competing in local competitions for fun.
