Dining out with the kids in tow doesn’t have to mean subpar pizza and Skee-Ball. Landon’s Gourmet Kitchen, a new farm-to-table restaurant in North County is revolutionizing date night. While parents feast on delicious California cuisine, kids can go have a blast in the restaurant’s chic, supervised Playroom and opt to order a meal off the kids menu. Read on to learn more about San Diego’s first eatery that boasts onsite childcare.

A Restaurant Concept Developed by Mom & Dad
Parents Charlynn and Garrett Mann were inspired to open Landon’s (which is named after their young son), when they discovered that finding, hiring, and paying a babysitter every time they wanted to go out to eat was an expansive hassle. (We can all relate!) The couple created a Restaurant/Playroom fusion so other parents could enjoy a lovely meal together while someone watches their kiddos nearby––no reservations required!

The Restaurant’s casual, rustic aesthetic and homey vibe makes it a comfortable environment for families. You order your food at the counter and it’s delivered to your table, which expedites the service and affords a more relaxed ambiance.

Playroom Rules
The 300 square-foot airy and serene Playroom boasts games, books, toys and a reading nook. Experienced childcare professionals staff the space and they have all had background and reference checks and are certified in infant, child and adult CPR, Automated External Defibrillator and First Aid.

Activities include reading time, group play, games and arts and crafts. Video games, movies and iPads are available upon request and parents are able to set a limited screen time for their kids. Kids can also enjoy their own meal in the Playroom (more on this below).

The childcare service is available for kids ages 1 to 6 with a few exceptions: older siblings may be permitted, all ages may be permitted during slow times at the discretion of management and kids of all ages may be permitted for large group reservations of 6 or more.

Cost: Much more reasonably priced and definitely more convenient than hiring a home babysitter, the cost of childcare in the Playroom is $8/hr. per kiddo, with discounts available for families with multiple kids: $4/hr for the second kid in the same family.

Food for thought: go on a couples date night so your wee ones who may have separation anxiety can hang out with their friends while you dine with yours!

Good to know: parents get a security tag when they check their child in to the Playroom and the child will wear a security tag at all times with their name on it. When parents pick up their kiddo, they must present their matching security tag. Parents need to remain on the premises while their kids are in the Playroom.

Playroom Hours:
Tues.–Thurs.: 5-8 p.m.
Fri.: 11 a.m.-2 p.m. & 5-9 p.m.
Sat.: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. & 5-9 p.m.
Sun.: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. & 5-8 p.m.

Fresh, Fantastic Food
Landon’s Gourmet Kitchen serves brunch, lunch and dinner made from scratch incorporating fresh, seasonal, locally sourced ingredients into the dishes. You’ll find everything from rotating soups and salads, burgers, fish & chips and stuffed avocados, to one of their top-selling items, the Falafel plate with homemade harissa sauce. The menu’s eggs and dairy items are from Hollandia Dairy in San Marcos and produce from Solutions Farms in Vista graces the plates as do artisan breads from San Diego’s own Sadie Rose Baking Co.

Meanwhile, in the Playroom, you can either select a meal for them or your kids can order autonomously off the Lil’ Kids Menu. Options come with a main dish, two sides and a drink and include faves like grilled cheese, organic chicken strips, organic mac & cheese, apple slices and cucumber wheels with Ranch dressing. Little cookie monsters will delight in Landon’s Cookie Platter & Milk (shown above), which comes with assorted fresh cookies and house brownies served with chocolate ganache, scented whipped cream and local Hollandia Farms fresh milk.

Date night done right.
